What a week...

I ate some beef jerky late Monday night and about an hour and a half later started feeling a bit uneasy in the stomach. I finally got to sleep around 3am, although I was still feeling pretty bad. I awoke around 4am violently ill...vomiting, chills, etc. Went to the emergency room around 6am where I was given an IV for dehydration and some anti-nausea medicine. Food poisoning at its finest.

I got home around noon on Tuesday and was in and out of sleep the rest of the day - absolutely fatigued. Come Wednesday morning I awoke groggy with a bit of a headache. The headache then gradually increased throughout the day to a point of intolerable pain. I tried ibuprofen, but it did nothing. I tried getting some sleep, but the pain was so bad I couldn't sleep more than 15 - 20 minutes before awakening. It felt as if my head was in a vice I could not escape from. Miserable.

I went to the doctor today and was given medicine for a migraine, which was likely caused by the food poisoning/dehydration/lack of eating. I'm only now beginning to feel somewhat normal again. Thank God for codeine. That pain was unrelenting and unbearable.

Never again will I eat beef jerky.

That's a tough one. Glad that you're feeling better.

That sucks, I lvoe beef jerkey. I have two tins in my office right now lol.

im sorry, but NOTHING will EVER keep me from my beef jerky, lol

hope you feel better man

sorry to hear that...What brand was the jerky?

I know what you were going through with the migraine... I get them at least once every couple of days...they really suck

good to hear you feeling better

Been down that road before, and I know it sucks.
Eat lunch at work one night (night shift) Was feeling fine until an hour after I got home. Went down hill fast.....

Wife took me to the ER, and by time we got there, I was out of it.. They had to come get me in a wheel chair from the parking lot. 2 IV's and Meds....I thought I was going to die. I crashed in a hospital bed for a few minutes and awoke screaming for a nurse.....as soon as a whole team came rushing in.....everything in my gut came rushing out.....LOL.....while they wre cleaning the mess, I fell back asleep. HAHA,
Food poisoning is nasty stuff. Some cases are worse than others, but man, I don't want it again!!!

Hope you get to feeling better soon!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure how you got food poisoning from beef jerky as it's cooked and dried, unless it wasn't cooked at the proper temp. It could have been something before that. To prevent illness, it has to be cooked to proper temperature, which for beef would be 165 degrees I believe. Not sure what the other ingredients are in beef jerky besides beef and spices.

True story--you can take raw meat like a nice big roast, leave it out on your counter for a couple of DAYS and as long as you cook it to the proper temperature it is safe to eat and will not make you sick. I don't recommend this, and I'm not sure it will taste "good", but it's absolutely true.

Thanks for the support everyone!

r_wain, I can't imagine going through a migraine that often. It must be tough. The jerky was K.C. Masterpiece. I've had it before with no troubles, so perhaps it was expired and I didn't notice. I had already thrown away the package before it hit. Still, the memory of the experience pretty much does it for me with beef jerky. Too bad as I really like the stuff.

TexasTB, I've had it happen once before as well, but didn't have the migraine experience afterward. The first time was actually worse - closer to how your experience sounds. I felt like I was dying - writhing in pain. The doctor could obviously see the pain I was in and administered some morphine which did the trick. This time around the initial pain wasn't as bad, but I guess the migraine afterwards made up for it.

Again, thanks for the kind words, everyone.

EDIT: Dengood, I don't know how the jerky did it. But it's the only thing I'd eaten for hours and was feeling just fine up until then.

Glad you're feeling better! I got food poisoning from Chili's one time. I'll never forget it. My wife and I had to drive 70 miles back home after eating there and I can remember burping every few minutes, not a big "carbonated" burp, but small quiet burps to myself and I knew something was wrong when my wife asked me what she kept smelling that smelled like "death"! Yes, it was burps, not farts! She said she has never smelled something so bad in her life. I went downhill fast, EXPLODING in every direction!! THAT my friends, was a long ride home:o

Sorry this was so gross, but it truly was horrible.

Ok, it's so weird you questioned the beef jerky, dengood. Now it looks like it may not have been the jerky.

My wife just got a call from one of our friends who was at a Super Bowl party we went to asking if either of was was sick. Looks like I'm no the only one who fell ill this week. Three others began suffering similar syptoms early this week as well. It must've been one of the dishes at the party that had a delayed onset. I didn't think there'd be such a delay in the onset of illness, but with three others falling ill, it looks that that's what happened.

So, maybe I can go back to the jerky after all. :)

And yes, that is a horrible story, dengood! Being trapped in the car when going through that must've been awful..for both of you!

#1 most common place for contracting food-born illness is church dinners/cookouts
#2 most common place is parties!

Folks, we have a winner:applause:

It used to be worse but I have adjusted to them. I have pills that I take to control them but they really don't work. I hope that was the only time you have to experience them. I wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy...well maybe but I would really have to be angry :D

the reason I ask the brand is that a friend of my ill because of beef jerky...the doc said it was probably the seasoning that the jerky had on it.

Food poisoning sucks my new years was spent hugging a toilet because of a bad coney dog!!! I feel your pain and hope you feel better and that the headaches go away. Mike...

Some beef jerkeys are dog jerkeys, meat tastes and smell like dogs. I serious.

I I was you, I would talk with a professional lawyer, and see if you can teach that "beef jerky company" a lesson.;)
