Not wiping off paint sealant

What would happen if you never wiped off the paint sealant after applying?

I applied it on my wheels, but they still have a nice shine. Nothing bad would happen?

I like the extra protection.
 
The paint Sealants that do require to be wiped-off---after they have dried/hazed---may find it difficult to properly cross-link, if this hazy/dried residue is not removed.
Where, then, will the protection (let alone any extra) come from?

My layman's-speak: "Air-activation"...comes to mind.
