I am pretty much new to proper car cleaning/detailing. Currently my only experience really was the whole wash/dry, detail vacuum("detail is loose, but I did my best to clean every crevice I physically could, even if I remove some paneling), and use stuff like wipes to clean stuff. While I take pride in my ability to turn that smoker's unkempt ride from bad to pretty good looking and ready to be sold, that is really the highlight. Years ago I got a Cadillac CTS and I started looking into this site, but ultimately the car would have been a bigger fight than I wanted to keep up with(cost of supplies, it was never garaged so it never got a break from crappy weather).
Now I have a <10k mileage 2016 Honda Accord that is basically as close to new as I'll probably ever get. I want to take care of this thing as best as I can. So I am going to be starting off w/ ordering the supplies recommended on the Proper Washing and Drying Technique page and also Interior Cleaning and Conditioning. It seems this is the most important given weather conditions in Ohio are going to be "reasonable" until fall/winter. It does have a leather interior, so I'll be looking a bit more into that as well as I have read a bit and there are some recommendations on proper materials to use to not stain/damage it seems. The next thing that will be up on my list would be getting into protecting the car's exterior. I have read about waxing vs sealant. I don't hate the idea of waxing, though I do realize this is a bit more work/hands on. That's fine, I love this car(I have wanted an Accord since I was in my teens, just have always liked it, super happy now having almost the perfect one and nearly new.).
What I was curious about, during the winter what is the situation with using sealant instead of wax? I love the car, it has a nice garage home, but I really do not want to be waxing in cold weather. I hate the cold. If I can avoid the TLC stuff during the cold, I'd like to go that route. But this is where I am hoping for someone who can maybe direct me to someone who can advise or a good guide regarding waxing during good weather and sealant during bad.
The other thing I was curious about, during the winter, I likely won't be hand washing my car. (Its cold, water compound the not fun aspect of this, just, no thank you.) How bad is it to use a car washing place during this time? A former relative of mine mentioned something about it "scratching" the finish. If this is the case, am I able to repair it in the spring by doing a thorough detailing job?
I appreciate the time and am really looking forward to this. I used to be big into car audio and have always had an appreciation for the work and love a person puts into the car. So I am really looking into getting into taking care of my baby and learning some new skills along the way.
