Yesterday I tried baby oil a.k.a mineral oil that smells terrible, to remove some dried wax on my outside black plastic mirrors. I didn't want to go the peanut butter, school eraser, or AIO route but rather try something new. I must say that rubbing the oil into the surface just ittle bit, and wiping off excess with an old MF left an awesome shine and surprisingly was not sticky at all. It rained here all day and last night and no streaking at all! I used 303 in the past which streaked (still awesome for interior though) and AA tire foam which only lasted a short time (love it under the hood though). Soooo, I guess within my rambling here I am curious to know if anyone else uses or has tried baby oil and anyone sees any possible adverse effects to doing this? Thanks! :righton:

my only personal reservation with this is considering how easily burnt people down here in South Florida get using baby oil before going out in the sun. It seems to amplify the UV rays. So will it prematurely age or distress the trim pieces ??

Haven't tried it for that application but here is an excerpt from what Wikipedia has to say:

"Cleaning

Mineral oil can be used to clean heavier oil stains by diluting and liquefying the other oils, rendering the oils more accessible to detergents. Likewise, it can be employed to "de-gum," to remove adhesive residue left by price tags or adhesive tape. It can be used as a cleaner and solvent for inks in fine art printmaking as well as in oil painting, though turpentine is more often used.

Mineral oil is also used in some guitar string cleaners, since it can help mobilize dirt and oil without contributing to the oxidization of the metal strings.

Mineral oil can leave a residue, which is undesirable in some applications."

The Wikipedia entry is fairly long and an entertaining/enlightenly read:

i was going to mention this as well. baby oil intensifies uv rays from the sun and causes skin to dry out. it will dry out vinyl for sure, so i would only assume that it can dry out exterior trim as well beings

Makes sense what you guys are saying regarding the UV intensifying properties of baby oil. I guess now that it has cleaned the mirror housings well, I can remove it with KAIO to avoid UV damage. Gonna have to look into this further. Thanks guys.
