I have noticed that my daughter's math text books attempt to be more integrated by adding multi cultural names to their word problems. I'll see stuff in there like Juan and Sheniqua were collecting sea shells etc etc but this one that I just saw takes the cake!! This is a direct quote from her math book....

"Demosthenes had a bag of pebbles when the sun came up. He put 17 pebbles into his mouth. Then there were 46 pebbles left in the bag. How many pebbles were in the bag when the sun came up? Write a subtraction pattern and solve the problem."

Who in the world comes up with this stuff???

How do you even pronounce that? That is awful what was wrong with the four letter names that I had back in the day? Mike...

WHAT THE! Demosthenes:confused:
What kind of language is that anyway?

I had a Real Estate deal I lost b/c I couldn't pronounce the guys last name, it was something like Hopenhurfeidermein. And the way he pronouced it made no sense with his accent. He got offended I couldn't say his name, even my title company was like how the heck do you pronounce that. Sent the name to my friend and he was like "are you f'n with me, how do you say that".

Sorry he got offended but I'm not the one witha name myself nor my biz partner could pronounce even after he kept repeating it with his accent.

Bill, I think the answer should be: 46 + 17 = 63 (he had 46 pebbles left in the bag AFTER he put the 17 into his mouth at sunrise)
