I had read somewhere that paint sealant (i.e. BFWD) could be used on glass. Anyone every done this? Did it work?

I've used all my paint sealants on glass w/o a problem, except Klasse sealant glaze, doesn't work on that, a PITA to remove but all others I have work well. Griot's Garage also has a new glass sealant too and people have said good things about it, good luck to you.

Jay, Whatever protective product I am applying to the paint I apply to the glass as well. If you look around some companies are more than happy to sell a product for every different type of material under the sun. In some cases it's for good reason but oftentimes it's just to take as much of your hard earned money as your willing to provide them. Wheel wax for instance... The fact the paint is on the wheel instead of the body of the vehicle doesn't make a difference other than the level of heat on some of it's parts and the fact its exposed to a higher volume of brake dust. There are coatings and other products for paint that also work on wheels better than any wheel wax ever will.

Having said all that I have heard from my trusted friends that aquapel is an incredible product for glass. I personally have never used it. Like I said I would use the same protectant I used on the rest of the non porous surfaces unless your doing it as a hobby in which case it's fun to try many things for yourself. Sometimes I'll switch it up to use some of my different products per surface but as general logic it's not necessary.

Yes, bfwd will work great on glass as well as paint.

Try Griot's Glass Sealant. For the price of 2 Aquapel applications you can get a bottle of GGS that gives about 20 applications.

CeeDog's post was spot on, especially about wheel wax for instance! Tol add to it, there's glass and wheel clay as well, I've always used my regular clay on the windows and have never clayed wheels.

Thanks, I was wondering the same thing. New Honda with 1K miles.

1. Could you/can you/should you also use BFWetDiam on the windshield glass?
The reason I ask is I used Collinite 845 on all windows and the windshield got weird
after a few days. ???Maybe it was after rained on and used wipers??? Like the product became visible in spots so I took it off. Could it have been user error---put the Collinite on too thick or ??

2. Backing up one step, paint was done with Pinn Paint Cleansing Lotion and applied
with Flex 3401. Likewise, would that be of value on the glass/ get that final smoothness
before BFWetDiamond?

Thanks for comments on this,

I use wolfgang paint sealant 3.0 on my glass. Comes out nice everytime.

Hi Bob!

1.- Not sure why that happened but probably won't happen twice. If you buffed it all off it shouldn't come back. With some high content Nuba you can get "sweating" after you buffed it all off but I wouldn't expect it from 845.

2.- In my opinion there's no reason to use the paintwork cleaner on the glass unless you are just trying to remove old wax or sealant. It would work fine for that but you my as well just use M105 on the glass. I guess it's all good really. What you did is fine and shouldn't have an issue. Using paint cleaners or paint polishes on glass won't remove any swirls or cut the glass at all but they can remove topical water spots easily.

Thank you,
I'm thinking it's experiment time---I've been corrupted by this forum ;)
Take the rear window and M105 half of it. Then, divide each half in two and use
Collinite and BFWD on each of those 1/4 areas.
--see if you gain much/anything by doing M105 on virtually new glass. Compare each half.
-- see how Collinite vs BFWD compares initially and over time.
Anybody done a similar test I can just read instead LOL ???

I use DP Poli-Coat Paint Sealant for glass. It works great. They key with any sealant on glass is to apply it very evenly and thin. Otherwise I have seen it bunch up in a line in the middle of the windshield from the wipers. IF this happens the line goes away after the next wash though.

i just used KAIO on all exterior windows, except the windshield, and found it to be great...crystal clear.

New glass like yours no point in polishing if it's clean with no water spots. The paint cleaner you used would have removed any wax that was on there.

Your test between Durability of 845 and bfwd on glass would be interesting.

About how long would a coat of WGDGPS last on the windshield? Meaning how long will it be effective at beading?

Don

If your looking for long lasting glass sealant, get GTechniq G1 or G5. G5 will not last as long as G1, but will shed water faster off you windshield.

I used to use KAIO to prep glass, Opti-Seal to seal, and UQW to top up. Works pretty well. The main concerns you have with this is that you need to use a gentler cleaner on glass instead of normal IPA-based glass cleaners (I used Poorboys Spray and Wipe), and wipers can degrade the sealant pretty quickly. I have since switched to a local company's glass sealant which resists wiper action better, and also has better water behaviour.

Don, honestly there are sooooo many factors. On paint we of course have many factors but in the windshield you have to add, the condition of the wiper blades, the tension on them from the arms, what is in the wiper wash fluid, and probably most importantly does the driver use them for every drop of water like my wife or does the driver risk being smacked by his wife by leaving the wipers off so he can watch the beads fly off in the middle of a tropical storm like me :)

So, honestly I have no clue. It can be anywhere from the same as the paint to only a month ime.

...

He, he, he...I am always having this exact same discussion with my wife!

those beads are so mezmeiizing and relaxing...dangerous for me to be behind the wheel when it rains..i actually try and see how long it is before i need the wipers, or how fast i can go so i dont need them!
