Hello,

I recently bought a 2013 Chevy Silverado, the last owner took very good care of it, except for the painted on Pinstipping. So half assed tribal stuff. The truck is Red with a Black interior, the pinstripes are blue and some silver. I have noticed that after buffing the truck the other day that some of the stripes came off just with a mild buff and Menzerna 400. So today I went out and tried good old lacquer thinner, and it isn't coming off that easy. Any thoughts? Wet sand it off with 2000 grit?

Thanks everyone

You could give it a shot with some plastic razor blades. If you want to wet sand it, you could try masking around the lines with some painter's tape to knock down most of it that way. I think you could even get away with dry sanding it that way if you are really careful and then removing the tape and finishing with a wet sand.

The problem I see with sanding is the altering of the finish texture. Whenever you sand to remove a defect, or in your case the stripes, you end up with the sanded area being smoother than the surrounding area. To some that is not a significant concern, but being an old painter, it bothers the #### out of me. Therefore sanding should be a last resort, unless of course you want to sand the entire vehicle.

You could try with something like this
Adhesive Removal Disc | Edgetrim.com
Its made of a very soft rubber but it will definitely do the job.
If you don't want to buy something like this I suggest a "light" thinner that you can find on every paint store. This is a universal kind of thinner that its not designed to be used with auto paint, I say this because this thinner will not affect the clearcoat.

Perhaps you could contact VON HOT ROD the famous pin stripper. He was at Detail Fest this year.Tell him Renny Doyle sent you. They grew up together.

Oh trust me, I hate wet sanding!! If there is another way, I will exhaust all other idea's before I wet sand.

I saw a video on this site where a guy removed a factory stripe with compound and a DA. Sanding would be much faster, but if you don't want to sand, can be done. Keep in mind the pin stripes are the last surface, so easiest to remove.

Hello Everyone,

A quick update. It took a few cold beers before I got the balls to try Easy Off Oven cleaner, but I did. I masked off as much paint as possible around the painted on pin stripe, then sprayed the oven cleaner over the pinstripe, waited 5 minutes and it just wiped right off. Then I cleaned the oven cleaner with a 50/50 ISO / Water mix. Very easy and it at least worked for me.

Thanks everyone,

Repeated lacquer thinner or acetone.just keep going over it one panel at a time and keep the cloth wet with product.or spray some caustic apc and clay rinse and done.regardless what method you do ,it will need some polishing after.
