Ok so here's the deal. I the rims on my first car have chipped and weathered paint. So I tried the 'plasti-dip' route. But since that is a fairly soft, pliable, elastic coating - it didn't have the durability I wanted.

If I were to paint them matte black, what would I do? Hit it with 80 or 200 grit sand paper, a coat or 2 of self etching primer, then 3-4 coats of matte black rustoleum? I am looking at this as a budget project. The rims aren't worth doing anything 'nice' to like powder coating or something. They are the base model rims on my first car.

Here is how they look right now with the plastidip coating. I'd like to replicate that in something that doesn't peel off when I wash my car :buffing:

hit youtube..Im fixing to re-do 2 sets..youtube has a bunch of videos on it...

If you used Plasti-Dip on your wheels you should be able to wash your car, you just can't have to be careful when it comes to the wheels. I used Plasti-Dip on my wheels and just washed it last weekend without any problems. Just be gentile when drying.

Mswerb: it comes up from the edges of the rim when I use by brush to scrub my tires/rims. The lug nuts also grab the plastidip and pull it up when I rotate tires.

If I were to do matte rustoleum, would I still have to clearcoat it?

Snowdrifter...
On those rims I would peel the Plasti-Coat off and simply sand (scuff) with some 120 and some Scotch-Brite...clean with some denatured alcohol and shoot them with the matte...clear coat will give them some gloss.:dblthumb2:

I would use the "high temperature" rustoleum for barbeque grills and such. Just make sure it's really matte if that's what you want. I even sprayed a muffler with that stuff...

I have painted three sets of wheels matte black. What I did was use scotch brite pads and rough up the surface. I then used a self etching primer. Two coats. Lightly wet sanded the primer. I then applied three coats of wheel paint. I picked it up at summit racing which was local to me, but I am sure you can find it at any auto parts store. I lightly wet sanded the third coat and then sprayed one top coat on. I ran the last set of wheels for a while, even through a tire change and they still look great.
