I believe the XP also has a longer cord but biggest difference is the XP has a more powerful motor with regards to torque output.

I have a 7424 that works great. Been thinking of upgrading to an xp but not sure if its worth it although i think they are reasonably priced. Maybe if I go to a rupes.

I love the PC not much difference between the two models. If getting another DA on a budget get the GG. If looking for more power then the Rupes, if still more power and you don't have a rotary then get a rotary. On a budget get the Dewalt if not the Flex 14-2. If you want a hybred rotary/DA but technically still a DA because of the action then the Flex 3401. Basically unlimited power, yet safer than a rotary for those; "I lost concentration dumb moments you wish you could of had a do over moments". Come on now everbody who has used a rotary knows what I'm talking about :buffing:

I also have an original 7424 - anyone know where to get replacement pads for them?

Don't bother with the stock pad That thing is worthless. Get a 5.5" backing plate and pads through Autogeek.

I've had by 7424 since 1999 and it's still going strong.

If I were you I wouldn't upgrade to the XP being you wouldn't see a big difference IMO
I upgraded from the XP to the Griot's DA and man what a difference it makes when performing a full paint correction.
You'd be hard pressed in trying to bog the motor down with the Griot's.
You could use your PC with four inch pads.
My PC is setup with the 4 inch pads and love the fact I have one with four inch pads and one with 5.5 inch pads. :dblthumb2:
