So I bought a Kompakt from ebay, it said used once. 165 for a HD with the 3 small backing plates and 1 inch extension.

Opened the box and noticed oil around the head. Then the light bulb went off I remembered reading about this issue.

So took the gearbox off and noticed the red seal had a defect.
It wasn't stamped right and had a chunk sitting on the housing which would cock it on an angle causing it to seep. I flipped it over and I hope this does it.

You can see it on the top here.

Then I decided I liked the switch better on top. The body this way feels more natural in my hand

Ouch....

Sorry to say but when you get a good deal.... sometimes it's not a good deal....

Buy used means no warranty either. Bob Eichelberg will be here next week, I'll show him this thread and ask him for his suggestions. My guess is he'll say to send it in to have it repaired by an authorized FLEX repair facility.

Bummer man....

:)

Thanks Mike, I would appreciate that.

I've had no problems with mine, and really like the little ripsnorter.

For some strange reason... :dunno:

This reminds me of the song:

jeez Bob, that reminds me of my daughter saying whatever dad.

Anyway, I already ordered the oring/washer from Powerhouse.
I will get some wolf head grease and repack it.

Mine did the same thing since new. They fixed it under warranty. Starting to do it again. Very nice machine though.

This is exactly what scares people away from owning excellent tools.

It should be an easy fix and not a big deal. For cryin out loud lets DIY these things. I don't know if it's the oring for sure but it sure looks like a seal problem.
Even under warranty, my god if it's as simple as an oring slap one in and quit crying. If it starts on fire then maybe the warranty would come in handy

I don't know if the original warranty covers shipping to and from or what. I would rather spend $7 on an oring and do it myself then ship it off for how ever long.

Either way this is a part defect with a simple solution. I read something about the mini DA doing the same thing.

To bad they don't have recalls like cars

Depending on what Flex decides to do I would either measure the o ring and replace or squeeze a small amount of a high heat permatex sealer type of product on it ,,all it has to is seal the damaged part of the O ring to prevent oil leakage,,just don't goop it on like a shadetree hick.

Sometimes the simple things scoot right over your head, I didn't even think of that.
A small bead on the inside applied with a toothpick would probably take up the slack.

Brake clean it then some Permatex ultra black.

Hey Spaz....

Sorry for the delay but I did talk to Bob and here's what he said.

Best way to get it fixed would be to send it to Powerhouse Distributing and let them fix it. If you feel confident to fix it yourself, then contact them and see about getting the seal and take a stab at replacing it yourself.

I think my PE8 dumped some oil the last time I used it. I got it on my hands and wasn't sure if it came from the polisher or if I got something on the polisher first. Really hate it when top dollar tools fail.
