So I've read through some of the older threads on this and many focus on the car and hint at the rims. I have my beater 2005 TDI passat that I'm thinking if plasti dipping the wheels. They are in fair shape with some scuffs so I figured I may give it a try. Anyone have any recommendations? What prep do you go through and were you happy with the results? How hard was it to get off? Any advice or experience would be appreciated. I've got some time until the weather here in Chicago breaks so I'm not planning on doing this until the weather is decent.
 
Plasti Dip really won't cover the scuffs and for prep they just need to be clean and then you can wipe down with IPA. It is very easy to remove and very durable if you apply it thick enough (at least 1 can per wheel).
 
Watching the videos online it seems people don't always mask. When your doing a rim do you have to mask the tire or will the plasti dip just peel off, or maybe just put a dressing on the tire so the plasti dip won't stick?
 
i had my rims plastic dipped for a while but they would get damaged when when washing and i gave up on it. i would not recommend it.

For prep i would wash it and do ironx and clay and you should be good.
 
you can peel it off the tire. waste of time to mask. i did however take my rims of my car
 
Plasti Dip is great if used correctly. I'd recommend taking your wheels off the car and cleaning them thoroughly. Lets them dry COMPLETELY. The Plasti Dip will cover scuffs and other curb rash rather well. I'd recommend using a MINIMUM of one can for each wheel. I bought five cans and used one can for each. Then I went back over all of the with the fifth can. Worked awesome.

IMPORTANT - If you don't put enough layers on your wheels, trim, emblems whatever. It will be a Hell to get off and you'll never want to use it again. MORE is better.

If for any reason its too thin to peel off in one piece. Soak it in 3M Adhesive remover and wipe off. I tried soaking it then pressure washing it off like some people do on YouTube. Needless to say the Plasti Dip got all over my panels and made a bigger mess. It took me 3 days to get it clean again and a lot of scrubbing.

Yes you can put tire dressing on to obtain easy removal from the tires. It's better to mask it off just to be safe but then again tape wont stick to dressed tires.. Just make sure you cover your rotors and breaks to prevent unwanted over spray. You don't want that stuff on your rotors or breaks.

You can clean dipped wheels with Iron X for touch free cleaning.

How did washing damage your wheels? I used diluted car wash with a pressure washer and never had a problem. I did have some fading after about 7 Months. I put a light application of Trim restore on it and it brought it right back to life.
 
I don't want plasti-dip on any part of my car.
But if other people do: Then that's their choice.
I've seen worse things done to vehicles.

Not to mention it makes an awesome Bug Bra for Love bug season. Then after peel it off for preserved paint underneath. Hell even some of the high dollar cars Plasti Dip right away to protect those 5-10k+ paint jobs.
 
I'm sorry, but my vote is to save up and spend a few hundred bucks and get them powder coated. Like plasti dip is fast and easy, but looks like a DIY job..

I was going to say that at first.
But after I realized how much total area of the wheel it will actually cover:
My posting of it being a wheel cover was, at least for me, apropos.

My brother dipped his wheels. It was nice for a while but it's a pain to keep it clean and looking good. It came off easy as he put down about 5 coats. He ended up removing it and will eventually paint the wheels when he has time.
 
I am contemplating plasti dipping the spokes on my Torq thrusts black but would use the glossifier if I did them. Not a fan of matte black. 2 cans per wheel? That gets expensive quick.
