Hey all,

As I am mostly just an enthusiast who does work for friends I have a question. I was doing a full polish / wax (no interior) detail for a friend of a friend and he asked if I accept a tip on top of my price. On a detail like this, given it costs a bit, I usually don't expect one.

For the true pro's of the world, what do you normally find? Do most tip when the bill is several hundred dollars?

Tipping is a gratuity for a job well done. It should be accepted when possible as long as you don't work for a company the prohibits it. I have found over the years that even a small tip for oil changes, service work, landscaping and more is a way to make sure the actual person doing the work has at least been recognized. Don't be upset or take issue if the tip is small, its the action versus the reward.

It all depends on the customer. I have a few that want to haggle over every dime (I usually won't do those) and I have some that are VERY generous. Some really understand and appreciate hard work - I got an $80 dollar tip on top of a $300 job on my last detail. I did do a few "extra" things for him but he really appreciated the job so it reflected in the tip.

My pricing also reflects current market conditions locally, the amount of time estimated, the type of work I'm doing and an extra associated costs. I don't expect a tip either because my prices account for everything already.

I see no reason why you should not get tipped. My business is in the service business (you know what I do Matt...LOL) and I think it is a way of showing appreciation.

When I work on my friends car I usually tell them (if they want to pay me and many times they do), I just tell them to treat me to a nice dinner or my favorite...I tell them to get me Lotto Scratchers $5, $10, or $20 scratchers...that is my fun. 1 time I got $500 from the scratcher!! I was stoked!!

If you get a tip accept it graciously with appreciation!

I remember a recent thread where a Detailer was upset because he didn't get a Tip after he quoted a price for the job...then did a bunch of extra work that wasn't discussed with the Customer

On the job I did last weekend, I quoted a price and the Customer said, "And no tip on top of that, right"

I told him I charge what I expect to be paid

I thought it was a bit strange, but some people are strange about tipping

You should always carry change

Always walk around the car and point out that you accomplished everything that was agreed upon and a little more

I never expect a tip

I found that few tip simply because they don't know any better. Those that do genuinely appreciate the extras you've done and are generous.

To me, a tip should never be expected...even by waiter/waitresses. I'm sorry they make squat for pay, if they don't do a good job they don't "deserve" a tip cause they are there. I deliver pizzas 2 nights a month and don't ever expect a tip. I am very grateful when they do give me a tip. The local pizza place by me has a $2 delivery fee and in that instance I do not tip. If the owner doesn't give the delivery fee to the delivery driver that's crappy of them, not my thing to deal with. I wouldn't work there if I didnt get that $.

And that's how I do it. I charge what I expect and don't expect the customer to have change. I don't go to Chipotle and expect them to have no change, it's no different if I have a customer.

Thanks, all. I had more of an uncomfortable response basically along the lines of what Allen said.... But stumbled a bit saying I can't say i turn down money. Felt kinda odd which is why I wondered what was practice. For my charge I just added up an hourly rate for myself and gave him that number, but then he wanted to give me an extra $50.

Guess he was happy... Was an older gentlemen who bought a new car and wanted it waxed but wasn't able to really do it well physically anymore. Prob just an old school guy...
