I painted my own car in my garage about a year ago, and although it looked okay from a distance, it definitely didn't have the shine I was hoping for. I wet sanded, but didn't have the right skills or products to finish it off properly. I met Mike at a car show and spoke with him for a while about my issues and got his recommendations. Following his recommendations I purchased the Porter Cable 7424XP, a flexible backing plate, and a set of foam pads, and Pinnacle Advance Compound.

I haven't spent too much time on it yet, but I'm really happy with the results so far.

Looks like you still need to sand down some orange peel, but it's a big improvement! I'm surprised any of those cars are still around, up here in the northeast they were all rusted out by 1980.
 
Great difference!! Looks good!! Just a little more fine tuning and it will be perfect!!!
 
I wet sanded my 240z last winter before I sold it. It really isn't too hard to do so long as you are careful on the edges.
 
Love those Datsun 240Zs. They are hard to come by. I love my 370Z, but the ride in the 240Z was exciting, of course I was a little younger too.
 
You've got a great handle on the job! It'll be very gratifying once it's finished.

Remember, I'm just a DIYer and not an experienced bodyman or painter. The conditions in my garage when I painted weren't the best, and my compressor was unable to keep up - So I had to keep waiting for the air pressure to come back up. I know the wet sanding could be better, but I'm really worried about sanding through and completely ruining the paint job.

I painted in three layers putting down the lime green first, then I covered it with pinstripe tape, painted the silver, covered the silver, painted the blue, then cleared everything. The three colors carry through into the door jambs and the custom fiberglass door cards as well.

That car looks really nice, I think that's just the way I would have done that back in the day, although I have a vague recollection of fender flares.
 
You can already paint, so if you botch it....redo it.
