The 7336 is the same as the 7424 (not the XP) except it comes with a sanding backing plate instead of the white polishing pad.

I use the PC 7335 which is the same as the 7336 but with a 5" backing plate...these are 1st generation units and are not very powerful but work just fine...I'll recommend you to install a 5" backing plate and use the 5.5" flat pads with it, so you can maximize the tool potential.

The answer to your question is "yes", they work the same way, they just are not as good at maintaining pad rotation under pressure, which is what you want when trying to remove swirls.

Frustration with clearcoat paints
Now let me tie this back to why machine polishing has become so much more popular since clear coat paints were introduced.
As more and more cars being manufactured made their way into the market, as car owners, or in other words, do-it-yourselfers, would try the traditional methods of removing defects out of the paint, that is with traditional rubbing and polishing compounds, they would find that most of these products may remove defects but leave their own defects in the paint at the same time.

hold on now! dont forget to mention that the porter cable 7336 only has 3.7 amps vs 4.5amps for the 7424, so the 7336 has less amperage and has different speed settings then the 7424. now the 7346 is EQUAL to the 7424 only difference is the 7346 contains sanding backing plate and the porter cable polishing pad. but back on track the 7336 might not have the pad rotation you are looking for with the less powerful motor. so i would just get the 7424 or 7346.lowes carries the 7346SP now. (the SP just means sander polisher)..i would just purchase the 7424 from AG. sure you need to wait but the price works out to be cheaper from autogeek....

Yes, other than the 7336 comes with a 6" counterweight or at least that was what it was years back when I bought mine from Lowes that was the advantage over the 7424 (5" counterweight)

also keep in mine the older 7336 only had 3.7a newer ones are indeed equal to the 7424 most ive found online of the 7336 are the older models with the 3.7a motor...and i did not realize the 7424 and xp had different amp ratings....im just so used to everyone talking about the XP i guess...

I honestly don't know what you are talking about. They were the same machine with the exception of the plate that came with them and as Pockets pointed out the counterweight. Electrically they were identical.
I think you are perhaps getting snookered by Porter Cable rounding up the current for whatever reason to 4 amps while some resellers might have actually tested and found them to be a little lower. I would imagine the range of 3.7-4.0 amps to be within tolerance for the motor on a mass production basis, anyway. One value might be with new brushes, the other with them worn in, etc.
This used to be discussed endlessly back in the old days...they were the exact same machine...7224/7336/G100...just different counterweights/things in the box.

This goes along with Mr. Phillips' article. I don't go above 5.5" pads. anything above is just too big for the PC. If you want to maximize your potential out of the DA's, I'd suggest Meguiars DA Microfiber Correction System 5 Inch Starter Kit, paint correction kit, dual action polishing kit which was specifically designed for DA polishers. I just purchased the kit and haven't used it but I've read nothing but good reviews for the system.
