Just picked one up for $100.

Already tested it out. Just letting it spin in the air and figuring all the buttons out. I LOVE the clutch inside that lets you have a slow spin start.

My only real question about operation though, is what numbers (1-6) correspond to what RPM? I highly doubt I'll ever need to use 5 and 6.

I figure speed 1 is the 1000 RPM, duh. But what about speed 2-4? Are the 1.5's, 2.5's, etc available for a 'more accurate' RPM?


Also, what RPM is safest with a wool pad and M105? I'm sure I can figure alot out when I get my panel from a shop, but for a ballpark guess so I at least know where to start.
 
Any speed is safe as long as you watch what you are doing, you just have to understand things happen a lot quicker the higher the rpm is. I would suggest staying around 1500 would be a good start. I have one of these buffers but it is at my parents house so otherwise I would look in the manual and give what the digits equal in rpm's. Also you can go to the Porter Cable website and you will be able to look up the manual and see what the settings are.
 
I have the manual. It came with it, but as far as I could see it has nothing pertaining to what digit equals what RPM.

Edit: Nothing about what RPMs = what digit. It has a chart about the Amps per foot of cord, but that's about it.
 
If I remember correctly it goes to 3000 rpm, if so it probably has same type of dial as the Makita so if someone has one of those they can tell you what each digit represents as far as rpm is.

Speed settings:
1 = 1,000 to 1,200 rpm
2 = 1,400 to 1,600 rpm
3 = 1,800 to 2,000 rpm
4 = 2,200 to 2,400 rpm
5 = 2,600 to 2,800 rpm
6 = 3000 rpm
 
There you go, problem solved. Now go and have some fun with your new rotary.

Ooooh, one more before I head to bed.

The bailing handle that comes with it. Is it exactly necessary to use it? My dad, who is an old timey body shop guy that did lacquer paints, swears by that handle. When he saw it, he said that I shouldn't touch anything without that handle on it that my fingers could get caught in it, or if it pulled/grabbed, it'd grab my hand and fingers with it.

I'm sure what he is saying is true, but is it really that high risk?
 
It is all about what you feel comfortable with. I can't stand a bail handle and some do, so just see what works for you.
