Ok using my PC for the first time...

Problem...

First of all, is the great area of the pc suppost to get really hot?

Second, i was just using it on my brothers car and i began to smell something burning...i stopped working and out came smoke from the machine....

The PC is in its first uses and i dont think this is right...

HELP!

Contact the dealer then, something is wrong when it smokes...not cool if it starts burning.

Or contact Porter Cable direct, they should take care of you.

thanks truls...man this is a bummer...maybe now i need to try and get my money back and get the UDM...man it would be my luck that something like this happened

Always boring when something brakes down at first time use. I hate when that happens

Good luck replacing the PC, and if you get a refund, the UDM looks like a great machine imo

im starting to think that the problem with my PC occurs during pressure placed on the machine while in use...b/c i took it outside and turned it on but without using it on a car...it staid cool and no smoke...

...so does anyone think that i should give it another try? i am almost tempted to use it on my car using just 360 b/c i know it doesn't require alot if any pressure...but then again what about when i need to use pressure?

what should i do?

This must be why you called me?

I strongly suggest trying to get your money back and return it.

Then either buy another PC or wait for the UDM, HOWEVER you must buy from AG, lol.

when you add excessive pressure to a PC it will over heat...you should just use 5-10 pounds on pressure....I use the weight of the machine and some pressure...very little....also do not block the air intake for the cooling fan...

the more you bog the machine the more current it draws to keep it going causing it to over heat...you can actually melt the coatings on the armature windings which is a epoxy....there is a limit to what you can do with a PC....if you have to bear down on it to the point of bogging it ..then you need a rotary....

bogging as if the spinning action would stop...it never did that...

the orbiting will not stop....the motor sound my drop a pitch or 2...I seen your other post where you said the gray motor enclosure was hot to touch..thats the armature cover...so it was over heating..you may have a bad one or you may have over worked it....try doing it with just the machine weight and some pressure and see if it heats up...if not then you used alot of pressure...if it heats with little to none than you have a bad machine....

al i took the machine outside and just ran it and no heat...maybe ur right maybe i was putting to much pressure although i didn't think so but i guess its a possibility since this is my first time...

if i was putting to much pressure...and then the smoke...do you think the machine is already done for or will it be ok?

i guess i could go out and try it on my car with a blue pad and 360...

but what i am wondering is the PC movies ask for 10-15 lbs of pressure...what type of pressure do you think the machine already puts on it from the start?

your best bet is to work it now and see...if it quits then its gone..it it works good then no problems...they are rugged...I my self like you did the same first time I used mine...and mine is 5 years old now..and works fine....I use mine for car work and wood finishing..it gets a beating...use it for a few hours and see how it does...do not lay a ton of pressure..just the weight of the machine and about 5 pounds of pressure to be safe..just to test it...

AL

how does one know what 5 lbs of pressure is? to begin with?

also, i just used it on my bro's car with only the pressure of the machine Lc CCS blue pad and 360...no heat seem to be generated...

ok i went upstairs to a scale that we have and i wanted to see...

i had both of my hands on the scale with the pressure needed to keep my on my toes...it came back as 10.8 lbs...im not sure that i was putting that much pressure on the machine...

ok al well i was about to put another pad on the PC and try another pad and polish combo...

in the time it took me to write those two post and find out what 10.8 lbs. of pressure is (at most 10 minutes but more likely 5 or 6)...i went back to the PC picked it up and it was now twice as hot as what it just was...not burning but significantly hotter then after the 5 minutes of use...

It was hot from just sitting there with no use..if so then i would say it is toast....best bet would to contact PC center and tell them you just used it and it smoked..do not say you think you applied to much pressure...just say normal use is all...it may also be just a defected one..they do come in bad also....seen posts where some used it a few minutes and it heated also and found it it was a bad one...

ok well then i guess on tuesday i will call the place i bought it and PC and tell them that the PC became very hot after just 10 minutes of use and at one point smoke came out from the PC...all through normal use...
