So I tried claying a car for the first time this past weekend and came away mostly happy except for one issue. First I used a Meguiars smooth surface clay bar kit and followed the directions it came with along with some advice/guidance on this site. The claying part went very well, and after completing it I saw/felt a noticeable improvement in the paint.

Now for my only complaint. There is some type of residue left on my paint. It is a thin haze and I am having a heck of a time getting it off. I used the provided quik detailer and I did not let it dry. Despite rubbing a good amount with a clean towel I cannot get this residue haze gone.

My questions for you guys are what is this haze (left over clay or left over quik detailer)?

How can I get rid of this haze? Should I spray more quik detailer on and see if it comes up?

I am wanting to begin the polishing portion but this haze makes me nervous since I don't know what it is.

Thanks in advance,
Pete

Try using a clean microfiber towel and mist some of the quick detailer on the paint. Wipe off product and flip to a dry side of the towel to buff the remaining residue off.

If that doesn't get rid of the haze you speak of, my next guess is that you are seeing lots of micro marring that caused the hazing on the paint. If you have any light polishes, try rubbing some in with a foam or microfiber applicator and see if it removes the hazing.

Thanks for the help, I did get that residue off finally. Maybe the colder weather was hindering me, but all is good now.

It's clay residue, the polish would have taken it right off as soon as you start polishing over it. If you aren't polishing afterward, mineral spirits will remove it very easily. It typically occurs when you don't use enough clay lube.

X2. The cold temps aren't friendly on clay bars. I don't clay my cars in colder temps. The clay gets a little too hard and leaves more residue behind.

In case if you are sticking with Megs product line, Swirl X will remove the clay residue easily.

I use pinnacle ultra fine blue clay,it's the best clay out their if you're into claying your car a lot, also use pinnacle clay lube. As far as mf towels go I always use gariots garage gold.
