Protectant vs Dressing

Is there a difference in the area of protection between something labeled as a 'protectant' vs something labeled as a 'dressing'?? When and where do you choose between the two if so??

I'm mainly asking for the the use of fender wells/undercarriage.

Sometimes I use a tire foam cleaner/dressing aerosol spray, but recently swapped to using Meguiars Hyperdressing diluted 4:1 because it does the job that I like.

Both terms describe the same type of product.

I think a lot has to do with just marketing...I consider dressing the general word covering many different products where protectant usually implies something with UV protection but despite labeling you cannot really tell which product is better than another.
