Protecting Carbon Fiber

Hi all,

I just purchased carbon fiber side skirts for my Z06 and they weren't the cheapest things either. I was wondering what the best way to protect them from rocks and what the general care for them is. They appear to have a gel/clear coat on them. Should I have a clear film (3M Brand) put on them? If not what kind of sealant would be good. From just a general search I see CG Jetseal 109 is recommended. I have WG DGPS, not sure if that would be comparable.

Any thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have a carbon fiber intake on my challenger,

According to the guy that makes them, you can spray the gel coat with automotive clear coat to extend the time before the gel coat yellows. He told me eventually the gel coat will turn yellow no matter what, but sun exposure does expedite the process.

So, I'd spray them clear, sand and buff if needed, and keep an LSP on them just like paint, which is essentially the part you're protecting.
 
If they're clear coated (or gel coated), any quality wax or paint sealant will protect them. If you have Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant, I would use it. :dblthumb2:
 
If you want to protect from rock chips, a wax, sealant or coating is not going to help; a paint protection film is the way to go.

An LSP-product is not ever going to protect these, or any other type of side-skirts, from rock damages. Never!!

Your best bet, yet still limited (depending on the size of the rocks), is going to be PPF.
And...IMHO:
You'll be happier in the long run going with XPel Ultimate.

ppf is the best for protection. I have had 3M and Xpel ultimate. the Xpel is the better film.
 
Thanks for all the input.

I was think the film route and did not know about Xpel ultimate. I did have some tinted headlight film from them I used 5 years ago and was happy with it. Now I have to find an installer in CT and it looks like the closest one is about an hour away.

I'll post pics when they get done and they are on the car.

I would remove them, then put them in the china cabinet.
I drive a silver mini-van; I wish I was driving a red Corvette.
Let the rock chips fall where they may!
 
I use Road Wrap on our C6 for North Georgia mountain runs and long road trips. My windshield looks like it was sandblasted, but my paint is perfect. One caution, don’t put Road Wrap on your headlights covers.

Being as you already know they were not cheap, the best protection you could apply would be an investment well worth the effort and price. I'd go ahead and shoot them in clear, several coats, the more the better. Then once that's been cut and buffed wrap those puppies in a good quality PPF. As Bob stated, XPel Ultimate is right up there at the top of the list these days. :props:
