Hi all,

I am in the market for a couple of Kayaks and were wondering what you all have seen or used that would be good to protect the front of the hood and bumper from the tie downs that we will have to use for the front of the Kayak. My car is a 2011 Honda CR-V that is in excellent shape and I would like to keep it that way; rubbing from the strap concerns me.

I was thinking of using a micro-fiber applicator which from what I can see is foam wrapped in microfiber. Or even make something that would involve some foam and a microfiber towel.

I am open to any suggestions to keep my car in great condition.

Thanks,

Ed

Do you already have any of the "Honda" Kayak Attachments, or something similar?

Too bad many roof racks, by themselves, won't safely support carrying items of this nature.
Wouldn't have to worry about protecting vehicle-paint from tie-down straps.

I've seen just about anything that's used to 'cushion'
these types of straps will cause wear over time. :(

From product description:

THE KAYAK ATTACHMENT ALLOWS YOU TO CARRY A FULL-SIZED KAYAK SECURELY ON THE ROOF.
THE SOFT, ADJUSTABLE SADDLES FIRMLY CRADLE YOUR BOAT, WHILE THE REINFORCED STRAPS ALLOW FOR LATERAL STABILITY.
REAR FELT-LINED SADDLE for smooth loading.
MAXIMUM KAYAK SUPPORT AND HULL CONFORMANCE produced by large adjustable front saddles.

TWO STRAPS AND TWO RATCHETING TIE-DOWNS PROVIDED.

Where the line wrapped over the bumper I used pipe insulation.

After the boats were cinched down, nothing moved.

I must add, I'm talking 'sea kayaks' so the length was actually working for me.

Bill,

Thanks for the reply. Looks like the length of the Kayak we will be going with is about 10 feet so we will more than likely get some rub from the straps. I am thinking about layering it by putting some clear material on the hood and then pipe insulator wrapped in micro fiber. Not sure where I can get clear material similar to screen protectors for touch screen computers, phones, etc.

Perhaps this might work?

Wolf's “The Mask” Spray On Protection 500 ml.

You can get it on Ebay. Search "Paint Protection Vinyl". Works great. I use to use it to protect the paint from a magnetic mount antenna.
PM me if you like for easy application instructions.

Perhaps this:

Trimbrite Bodyguard Paint Protection Film : Cabela's

~$22.00 for a 12' X 5 7/8" roll.

Ahh that may be the trick. More than likely I will be putting it on temporarily when we haul the boats and then remove it when I don't need it. I imagine I would just put a small piece where ever the straps touch. The other thought that just came to mind was to use a vinyl coated magnet. This would work for the hood, but not for the bumper.

Sounds like that may be the ticket. Is the vinyl thick enough to handle rubbing before it rubs through?

I have Yakima racks that affix to the roof via the set points that are already there in the roof. I use it for both bikes and hope in the future the kayaks. I guess there's nothing that can be done to get around the straps as they prevent air from pulling it up and away from the roof.

Getting some good sugs for protecting the paint though.

That's what I love about the Forum, no matter what topivc I bring up I always get great information from folks that are eager to help!
