Proforce MF Towels from Sams Club

First of all some members on this forum said they purchased MF from Costco and Sam's Club and how they are okay... Well went to Sam's and decided to purchase these as an all purpose towel for the hell of it. You know cleaning the wheels, door jams, interior, plastic, wheel arch and cleaning a pad on the fly. I didn't expect much from them and sure enough I was right to expect nothing.

Well I machine washed it with DP Microfiber Cleaner concentrated microfiber detergent and degreaser and than machine dried it with air.

Well I'm bored so I started to fold it...than I decided to do some CD Test. Well I couldn't believe my eyes...

So I decided to use the special value "junk indigo blue" on another CD to see if it did the same thing. Nope.

So I pull out the free Cobra towel I got with my purchase of OC (the add said it was supposed to be the gold but I got a grey one) and it left a huge mark...

That's from the ProForce towels... AWFUL and will never use near anything that has been PAINTED. Will probably use for the undercarriage only, unpainted areas, foam pads on the fly and to clean up around the house.

See the scratches at 12 and 9? It was from the free cobra towel I got with OC

The other tiny ones are from the ProForce. Just awful.

I have found some nice towels locally that are plush 70/30 that pass the CD test. I have been looking for these for a few years now. The price is right too at $10.99 for 4 towels. One day I went to all the local detail/auto body supply houses in the area and bought the minimum amount of towels that they would sell me. I came home with 5 different types and 3 of the 5 passed the CD test and don't scratch finished paint.

I can't wait to see the guys face when I go in asking for 2 dozen 4 packs.

That's too bad about the Sam's towels. They're having a free guest admission to all their stores this weekend, with no 10% service charge on purchases for non-members, & I was going to buy a pack of their MF's. Guess I'll just go in to see what else they have that might be of interest. Thanks for the review Sean.

???????????????

I use these towels on everything including dark paints with no ill effects at all. If you drop any MF on the ground and pick up some grit it will scratch a CD.

Someone else put me onto the Sam's ProForce Micro fiber towels as well. Here's my advise to you. Take it for what it's worth.

Better check your washer and dryer because you're getting foreign objects from somewhere.

Believe me, when I seen your post my reaction was, "Oh crap." I had bought them too, but not so fast. I think something happened during washing and drying. That's an assumption, of course.

I went and got two of my ProForce MF's to try the same test on my own. I tried them straight out of the bag, and both MF's on two seperate cd's. I even applied about 5-10lbs. (approx.)of pressure and could not replicate what you've shown pictured. Zero scratches, so I put my cd's back in the original box where they came from to be used later. Yehawww!!!

Zero issues here! Even with approximately 5-10 lbs. of (approx.) pressure I couldn't replicate those scratches. I don't ever plan on buffing with that much pressure. I'll check and see if my wife's phone has video with sound. If it does, and I can figure out how to upload it, I'll prove my findings.

Now, don't take my post the wrong way, I just think something happened to allow foreign matter into the micro-fiber.

I went to BJ's and they have the same type of bulk packaged MF Towels. I saw someone had opened the package up and pulled one of them slightly out to, I'm guessing, feel that towel. It was very thin and cheap feeling. I think they have a bulk package of terry cloths that I'd like to check out for cleaning pads on the fly.

I used these towels right out of the bag on a black car that I had just finish polished and they made an absolute mess of the paint, tried them again after washing them and the same thing happened. I know it's not my washer because my DMTs and other towels don't have this problem. I tried cleaning glass with them and the linting was terrible before and after washing. I use them around the house with no problems though.

Just my experience with them.

I love to use them on the interiors or as disposable. They are great for cleaning the wheelwells because I refuse to wash anything that has been used for that.

I suppose that shows the cd test isn't valid. At least that's the way it seems. We already know that paints act differently. I guess from my perspective I never really liked the cd test because it's a different medium than paint. I really haven't gotten to use my towels enough to comment on the linting issue.

It seems others haven't had any issue with the Sam's mf's though, but again, I think it's more to do with the type of paint on a given vehicle.

I guess what I'm saying is after performing my own cd test I'd come closer to believing your results on paint than the scratches in the photo above. Perhaps different cd's have different hardness. Again, variables are involved. Perhaps I was a bit to quick to judge the results based on knowing that variables change things.

It still makes sense to test a mf on the paint of each particular car. If my .48 cent mf marrs the paint on that one car, I'll save them for another car. The expense of some of the micro fibers is over-the-top IMO.

It would also seem logical that no two polishes work the same on different vehicles either. Many of the detailers on this and other forums use all sorts of products because of this, at least from what I've seen on the forum.

EDIT:
Let me stress that I'm not saying your results or the OP's results are bogus. I'm just saying that there may be underlying factors, as far as marring paint, and that there may be more to this than what we visually see.

I have and use the proforce-sams mf towels. I can say I have only used these on the 2 vehicles I have which are fords and no problems at all . but I had to try this test for myself and I pinned it up against a gold cobra. I also prob applied more pressure than what I do when buffing . and both towels scratched the cd . after all doin this cd test we are trying to scratch it , and surely don't apply this to paint . so the cobra gray and yellow scratch just like a cheapy SAMs towels, how bout the purple ? I have no doubt that the cobras are better towels and if u go by this test then umm maybe not ? most of the cobras are what 75/25 blend and sams are 80/20 and made in china . I don't know what the blend has to do with the properties of the towel . softer? all these mf are made in Korea or china , who knows they may all come from the same place ? all I know is I have no trouble with the cobras or the sams - proforce towels so I'll just keep buffing .

I have to admit it's strange that we're getting different results.

Same here, I have a ton of these towels and use them all the time with no trouble whatsoever.

Its defaintely possible to contaminate towels in the washer/dryer. I had some Miracle towels that I threw in with a very dirty MF towel that I dropped on the ground in the garage when there was all sorts of stuff on the ground. After pulling the towels out of the dryer, all of them had a few tiny bits of leaves embedded in them. It took me 15 minutes with each towel to closely inspect and pull all of the leaf bits out.

It's these points and perhaps many others that lead me to believe that this whole CD test thing is a pointless and silly thing that we detailers do. All it really proves is that a particular towel mars a particular CD. I have towels that seem fine on black Honda Paint and the same towel mars super hard black Corvette paint, though neither scratched the CD during the test.

I have to agree :)
Though I highlighted some of the above points, I agree too.

Like M.P. says, find something that works and use it often.

Not the washer and dryer as my Mother's BF ownes a laundry place so we get all our cloths washed there. At my house the washer and dryer has only washed MF towels and these are the only ones that have had THIS much problem.

I will have to say its a hit and a miss because I knew someone of you would come out saying these are great towels and I don't doubt it. But I'm giving a PSA to check these BEFORE you use them on your paint.

As far as CD hardness its up for grabs. I have tons of CD from TDK to Sony and tons of DVDs from Verbatim to Fuji.

So yeah for me this bag of MF was just trash. I might wash it again with Tide Free instead of the DP MF wash to see if anything changes but I doubt it.

Since some of you felt that during the wash that they could have been contimiated in some sort of way

- The washer was washed and rinsed once with nothing in it.
- The dryer was vacuumed inside out

And once again these are the results with light pressure on a TDK CD-R

Verbatim DVD+R with the same amount of pressure different towel

Just an FYI these towels have short fibers on one side and longer on the other side. The short nap side is the one doing the most damage but also the longer side is doing bit of damage also.

So once again junk on the paint, thrown into the all purpose besides paint bag:)
