I am planning on using Lake Country 5.5 x 7/8 pads on a griot's 6" DA. I got to thinking about the thickness of these pads. At only 7/8" could that possibly be a problem with the backing plate contacting the paint? I will be using Meguiar Ultimate Compound and Ultimate Polish. Keep in mind that this will be my first time with a DA. Thanks.

You're okay as long as the backing plate is smaller than your pad.
7/8" thin pads will increase the effectiveness of your DA versus a thicker pad.

Just on areas where there may be a lip just take it easy and slow. Or where you have only a portion of the pad touching the paint.

Having a BP that is larger than the pad diameter is NOT, repeat NOT a good idea. Even though there is just an itty bit of plate showing, it is VERY possible (and easy) to nick the paint.
