I'm new at this, so I have what might be a "duh" question. Are tire gels and dressings really all about appearance? How do they protect? It seems as though only the visible parts of the tire are dressed, so if it is a protectant, why not do the back? Thanks in advance!

Why not do the tread too! J/K

Tire dressings are 99% appearence

I like water based dressing best

Mostly for looks. Two biggest things that contribute to a tire's overall life (other than driving) are exposure to the elements and actual use. If you leave a car parked the tires will age faster than if it is driven. Indoors is much better than outdoors. Other than that, just fo dekrayshun...

Solvent dressings will last longer and shine better but can rot tires if used heavily for prolonged periods of time. I like water based as well, i mix it heavy when I dillute it and it does a decent job of shine and protection.

Never use automotive tire shine on motorcycle tires! Fyi

Its like dressings for your plastic. It keeps the rubber supple and inhibits drying out from the sun and road chemicals.

Appearance, and the kicker is if you use some harsher solvent based dressings you can actually mess up your tire.

Dear Ben & Friends

Is Meguiar's High-Gloss Endurance Gel solvent- or water-based?

I've used it just once, but it's lasted through several washes and many rinses.

That's what I thought...appearance. But hey, that's important! Maybe I'll pick up some water-based dressing and see how I like.
Thanks!

It is solvent based. However, I do use it myself, and have since it came out. I have yet to see any adverse effects from using it.

It's all about the looks.....
