Question on 6" Counter Weight Porter Cable

I was wondering if the 4" and 7.5" (selfcenter) pads be used under the 6" counter weight for the PC.

I wouldn't use anything over a 5.5" pad for the PC. Anything larger than that your not going to get the results you want. I don't know about the 6" counter weight. I just use whatever came on the PC when I bought it and have not had any issues.
 
7.5" pads? Are you talking about the 7" Meguiar's SoftBuff 2.0 pads?'

Also, are we talking about a first-gen PC or a PCXP?
 
What backing plate are you using for each size pad? Best thing to do it weigh your BP/pad combos on a letter scale to determine if they will be okay.

Stick to Porter-Cables guidelines for smooth operation:
Porter-Cable 7424XP 5 Inch Counterweight 5" Pad Counterweight
#874011
For attachments between 95 and 105 grams.

Porter-Cable 7424XP 6 Inch Counterweight 6" Counterweight
#699933
For attachments between 125 and 135 grams.

Some reference info:
-A yellow urethane 5" backing plate = 113 grams
-A moistened 5.5 x 1.25 orange pad = 42 grams
Thus, the combination is 155 grams, 25 grams heavier than the 6" counterweight is designed for (55 grams heavier than the 5" weight)

Ideally, PC would make an even heavier weight for the PCXP. Clearly it is not designed to be used with 6.5 pads / 6" backing plates as they are even further outside of the specified weight ranges.

The 5" counterweight is 55 grams, the 6" is 65 grams. Somebody needs to make a 75 gram weight; there is room in the housing and it would make the PC completely smooth with typical 5" and 6" professional backing plates and pads.
 
SOrry, i was not specific....it was late night and had couple blue moons....but yeah i have a 7424XP. I have the hex type pads.
 
From what I gather the counter weight is pretty negligible in topics of what pads you're going to use. The real important factor is what size Backing Plate you're using with accordance to Foam Pad size.

IE:
five inch backing plate with a 5.5" foam pad
six inch backing plate with a 6.5" foam pad

So yeah you're six inch counter weight can be used with the four and 7.5" pads...but that 7.5 is pretty farking huge for a PC to spin.
 
OK, to continue the question about counter weights; I just bought the Lake County Hydro-Tech 4"foam pads, and also a backing plate for these pads. When I use these pads on my older model Porter-Cable the machine gets very hot! The motor gets VERY hot that is. No problem when I put on the 5.5 pads. The counter weight on the P-C is the same that came with the P-C when I purchased it. Any ideas as to why the motor heats up so much with the 4" pads? All other factors are equal. I orginally bought these pads to use on my motorcyle, but also thought I could use them on parts of my car. Thanks,

Good question, something I've never noticed myself when using 4" pads on a PC and also something I've never seen brought up and discussed on a discussion forum.

Could be as simple as less material for the heat generated to dissipate out into?
 
I'm using the WOLFGANG Total Swirl Remover and the Wolfgang Finishing Glaze, on the Hydro Tech Pads.

I don't seem to have any motor heating problems with the larger pads.

I'm going to send the link to this to my good friend Jason Rose at Meguiar's, he's incredibly knowledgeable about these types of things and ask him if he has any insight as to what you're experiencing.


Jason is a great guy so hang tight and if he does have any insight I'm confident he'll shed some light...
