1st of all, thanks Mike P. for sending this out for me to try.

Sort of perfect timing as I just decontaminated my daily driver about 5 days ago with the Nanomitt but didn’t have time to finish the job and lay down any protection.

Last night I was halfways done giving my car a waterless wash w/WG Uber when I came inside to grab a drink and noticed a package had arrived. Inside was a bottle of Sonax Spray + Seal.

I finished wiping down the rest of the car with Megs D114 to try to have as bare of a surface as possible for this new product.. Once the car was clean I rinsed it with the hose and did notice a bit of beading action from the WG Uber, but it quickly died down after a bit of steady rinsing, which was good news.

Here’s what it looked like. Just bare paint, no beading.

Now that the car’s wet, it time to spray the Sonax. About 3-4 sprays for each side of the hood. [hood on the Cadillac is Xtra large]

Set the bottle down and grab the hose... No time to wait. Rinse.

Well wuddwa know... It actually works. That was fast!

I must say I’m somewhat impressed by this beading, especially when I consider how easy it was to apply this product. The beading is actually a notch above the typical weak beading I see from most products out there. This ain’t too shaby.

Next I went ahead and sprayed my windshield. It tuned white foam during the rinse so I guess it worked, however my windshield was beading before I sprayed the product on [doesn’t everybody’s glass bead on its own?] and I couldn’t really see a dramatic increase in beading during the rinse off.

Lastly I tried it on my wheels. I cleaned my wheels with Wheel Brightener before I did anything to ensure they were as clean as possible before using the Sonax spray... Here’s what they looked like just before spraying the Sonax on them.

And this is after...

a5d7ef48b18e3893683885c1a494ddde.jpg

...I honestly saw no real difference or advantage to be had on my wheels. They basically look and behave the same. Similar to the glass, I really don’t see a change. I dunno.. I didn’t even bother spraying the Sonax on the other 2 wheels.

-So in conclusion, when it comes to the paint, this stuff definitely lives up to its claims. Respectable beading and if this were to be used after every bucket wash I could definitely see how this product could be used as standalone protection for a vehicle.

I’ll try to see how long this single application can last and will try to provide you guys with a future update. Thanks for reading.

Cool review. Products like these definitely pique my interest

Thanks for the review Ric, keep playing with it...

I really like this product and use it after each wash and rinse of the Golden Eagle!

:)

Oh don’t get me wrong, I’m impressed with the initial results on the paint. Even though I knew what to expect the actual results and witnessing how fast they happen exceeded my expectations. And something about the way the water behaves gives me a feeling this layer is a notch above the standard spray and wipe “spray waxes” that have been popular for a while and are generally priced below this product.

I’ve just never been sold on the whole “apply this to the glass to make it bead”
IME glass always has and always will bead on its own.

But if it can prevent contaminants from bonding to the glass... Well then that would definitely prove useful, because around here contaminants seem to bond to my exterior glass pretty fast. I’ll take your advice and keep playing with it.

Nice review and write up and pictures!

Will be fun to follow how the longevity is in your environment.

Update: It’s been 9 days since I applied the Sonax Spray & Seal and today was the 1st time I washed it in any way.

Still beading and pretty good too. Alot better than something like HD Speed would be at this point, I can guarantee that for sure. Not bad standing alone.

New update: It’s been 11 days since I applied the Sonax Spray & Seal...

Last night I was polishing the glass on 1 of the vehicles here at home and I thought about the windows on my Cadillac and how I noticed some specks of contaminants that wouldn’t come off this past weekend while I was cleaning the glass... So I cleaned the glass and did a baggie test and sure enough, it failed. The glass on my daily driver always gets contaminants bonding to it fast.

That got me curious about how the paint was doing, so I did a quik waterless wash with Megs D114 and what’d ya know... It failed the baggie test and failed it pretty bad.

After just 11 days of the Sonax Spray & Seal, I clayed my trunklid..

And this is what it picked up.

Here’s what it picked up on the hood.

Just to make sure this wasn’t a fluke, I’m going to give it another chance. After claying and getting the paint perfectly smooth, I wiped the panels down with Blackfire Paint Prep.

And re applied the Sonax Spray & Seal... I’ll be back with an update in about a week or so.

Wow!

What's in the air where you live?

When I taught the class at 3D in Santa Clarita, we washed a Audi Convertible, I forget the model but a newer car. After washing and drying we parked it until we were finished with the first two cars in the garage staged for detailing. (we detailed 6 cars that day)

The white Audi was parked outside exposed to the JUNK IN THE AIR IN CALIFORNIA for about 3 hours.

After pulling the car in, I wiped a white towel over the hood and turned it over and it was covered with black dust.

So what's in the air in California?

Pretty nasty for only 3 hours at our class.

That's insane to get that level of contaminants.

Wondering if you would get a cleaner paint with a bucket wash and a stronger car soap like Carpro Reset?
You often do a little more aggitations with a wash mitt I think. I don't know the cleaning ability from a waterless wash or rinseless wash. But have seen LSP to be revived with reset a lot of times. And with the amount of air borned contaminants you seem to have. I would be testing the cleaning ability from the wash solutions I used. Cause the LSP whatever it is you have on the car would not be any longevity from.

That sounds crazy Mike! 3 hours and get that dirty just from sitting outside.

Is it from the amount of vehicals driven in LA/California the air gets so contaminted? Or is it much of industries in the area too?

Well I do live less than a mile away from the port of Los Angeles, and also about the same distance from several refineries that are all located down here...

But the main culprit is where I park my car everyday... And what a coincidence, that painter situation that you posted in your old thread happens to be going on this exact moment here next to my car. [no overspray that I’ve noticed]

ff2eb65137305f38474b1d25b87b6045.jpg

But here’s where the daily barrage of contaminants try to make their way onto my paint... There’s probably hundreds of semi trucks that drive right next to my car everyday. That’s why any lsp I use needs to be extremely capable when it comes to protection or it won’t stand a chance.

I just did a full bucket wash this past Saturday [2 days ago] my car wasn’t even really dirty since then... But I did go over it twice with the waterless wash prior to claying because I thought about the same thing you did.

I was thinking the same thing!!!! And I live in California, not far from Eldo. Well, 10 miles or less I'd say.

Being in the South Gate area, I drive on the 710 everyday, so I drive next to them all the time.

I'm guessing there is something going on over by my wife's job, in ELA somewhere, as she always seems to have some film on her glass. Drives me nuts.

So what LSP do you prefer on your cars, to be extremely capable?

So what LSP do you prefer on your cars, to be extremely capable?

It’s a liquid sealant that’s been discontinued for a couple of years now. It’s not something that was ever sold on the AG store, so I prefer to not call it by name. But it’s the only thing that’s ever been able to protect my paint against bonded contaminants.

I tried Spray + Seal at the same time as Hydro Blue and Hydro2. I got ~4 weeks of water sheeting from all of them. That may be a little generous and I should probably test them again. But... holy crap those things are easy to use. I used a pressure washer, which is probably not necessary. Spray on while your car is wet and hose off. Done.

If it really is 4 weeks of sheeting these products are great for summer. Less ideal in the winter when it's freezing out.

I think these Spray and Seal type products would be great for someone like my Dad who is getting up in years. They seem really easy to use,and relatively idiot proof.

7 day update: A few things I feel I should mention.

-This update is just 7 days after applying the Sonax onto perfectly smooth paint. The 1st update was after 11 days...

-My car spent most the 3 day weekend parked in my driveway, in other words it hasn’t been driven much in the past 7 days.

-Due to Labor Day, it’s been very slow this past week and the number of semi trucks that normally drive by my car on a daily basis was about half of what it usually is.

I intended to hold of for at least another couple of days before providing this update, but I couldn’t help myself and I was curious about the results so I did a waterless wash w/Megs D114 on this spot, then I did a baggie test...

bd146b8bf9c84529c80e29a8d04366ac.jpg

It failed. I tested a small section on my hood and it also failed... So from there I decided to go ahead and give my car a full bucket wash.

For anyone who’s wondering, yes the paint was beading strong at this point.

fd88c810cc7abb8901d8706492714777.jpg

After the wash & rinse I fully dried the car using a Cobra Guzzler. I did another baggie test and it felt slightly less bumpy, but not enough to change the results. So onto the claybar.

I just read the description for Sonax Spray & Seal and counted the number of times they mentioned words like “contaminants” “protection” “road grime” etc... I counted 25 times. So you’d figure the protection from contaminants would be quite strong after reading that description right? Unfortunately I just don’t see it coming anywhere those expectations.

This proves an important point: Just because it’s beading, doesn’t exactly mean it’s protecting. Thanks for reading.

Great review and update! I haven't found anything that really helps with road grime accumulation. I think the stuff flying though the air doesn't care what's on your car. At 35-80 MPH it's going to get embedded. (And if you think about a car coming toward you, the relative wind speed could be 2x those numbers.)
