Hello everyone,

Yesterday I removed the clear bra from my car that the original owner put on about 6 years ago. The hood, fenders and bumper had perm bug marks along with marks and scratches that were beyond saving. It took about 4 hours with a small steamer and everything came off without much glue besides part of the fenders and hood. This is probably due to the hood being in the direct sun light or the heat from the motor.

I have done a good amount of reading and I have read everything from people using gasoline (hell NO) to rubbing alcohol, goo gone, goof off, terminator bug and tar but the most commonly talked about item was WD-40. I am very leary about using that on my paint but even talking to a auto body guy for 10 years said the same thing.

Please note the car will have paint restoration done to it this winter while it is garaged. It is a Cadillac CTS-V FYI

I purchased this on amazon as its on here however I have read several things about people using WD-40 without any issues and that it IS safe for paint. I figured I would try this 3M stuff first and go from there.

What are your thoughts and or suggestions?

Bob,

I ordered a 6 pack of this from amazon for $14 shipped already.
That ought to do it! :xyxthumbs:

Note:
Make sure to thoroughly wash the effected areas
when you're done with the adhesive removal.

Hello everyone,

Hi! Welcome to AutoGeekOnline!

Please note the car will have paint restoration done to it this winter while it is garaged.

Now is the best time to get it done. Make sure you get all the glue residue off first and then commence with the paint restoration.

Will you be performing the paint restoration?

This should work:
3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner, bug and tar remover, adhesive remover, decal remover, tree sap remover

Note:
Make sure to thoroughly wash the effected areas
when you're done with the adhesive removal.

:iagree:

My brother will be doing the paint restoration but I will be helping. He has done many cars including my last car (which I helped with). He does a fantastic job!

I attached a couple pics of my last car being done.

Good to hear.

See if you can get some pictures to put together for a Show 'N Shine thread. :xyxthumbs:

I will try and do that after the adhesive is off, the wheels are powder coated and the paint correction is done.

I am waiting on microfiber towels and the 3M adhesive remover to come in then the fun begins.

i use Goof Off from the hardware store and a bunch of cheap microfiber towels. once the rags get glogged up just toss them. i did this to an entire vehicle that was covered in PlastiDip residue.

Omfg laz is right!! Just spent about an hour with the 3m and wd40 along with the plastic razor blade on one area of the hood. It works but it's a slow process but the good news is under the glue the paint is AMAZING!!

You can a decent set of plastic chisels from Harbor Frieght. Get some Tarminator, spray it on and let it set for about 30 seconds and repeat. Been taking Diamond Shield and 3M clear bras off RVs for awhile now and found this to be the best solution. Once you're done you'll have to buff out the front end and seal it with a good polymer sealant.

What makes the tarminator any different than the wd40 and 3m adhesive remover? I have a plastic razor I've been using without any issues called Titan.

I don't have any experience with the Titan Blades but I looked them up and they appear to be durable than other plastic blades.

I have heard good things about the 3M Adhesive Remover... WD40 works on just about everything.

The clear shield I remove have a stronger adhesive backing than anything I have ever encountered. From what I am seeing with the Diamond Shields, they're installed right after the front of the coach is painted without even letting the paint cure for production purposes.

After much time they crack and brown and become an eye soar. Many times using a heat gun is out of the question. The only way to remove these is to use a steamer and one of these plastic chisels as most plastic razor blades and plastic putty knives aren't strong enough and will not hold up.

Just throwing another option out there.

Ok guys so ALL of the adhesive is now off the car and I will share my story and tips. I used goo gone, wd40 (worked well), 3M adhesive remover and the best overall was the Stoner Tarminator bug and tar remover. That along with the titan plastic razor blade (which you need to be careful with because it does leave marks if not careful) taking the plastic off took about 4 hours but taking off the adhesive took a couple days and a total of about another 4 hours. I sprayed the Tarminator on and let it soak in for about 5-10 minutes and then took the plastic razor blade to the thicker area's to get up the heavy stuff. After the heavy stuff was up I sprayed again and again and used cheap amazon microfiber cloths in a circular motion until the adhesive was gone.

The paint under the bra is SOOO nice and after paint restoration I will post pics.

good read..... great post... keep on posting cool

I started a new thread about what I got in the mail from mike.
