Removing residue from previous tire balancing weights?

I assume most places these days use the stick-on weights on the wheel barrel to balance tires. When they remove the old weights, they always leave some adhesive behind. How do you all address this? I’ve tried Goo Gone and similar products and scraping with some wooden or plastic scraper, but I never am able to get it all off and usually manage to leave some scrapes. This is while leaving the wheels on the car.

Is there a way to remove the crud without taking the wheels off? I am not a shade tree/garage mechanic so I’m worried that I might not reinstall the wheels back correctly.

If you can get your hand, and a cloth,
back in where the cruddy old adhesive
residue is...I’ll suggest applying some
3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner
to the cloth; and, then (gently) manually
wipe off the remaining adhesive/crud.


{Immediately afterwards:
Washing the wheel with your favorite car
wash shampoo would be advisable, IMO.}

Mineral Spirits along with a wooden or plastic scraper always works for me.
 
I just used a 3m eraser wheel for he first time on some emblem adhesive after debadging. It worked amazing and this is my plan next time I have wheel weight residue to remove, even though I haven’t actually tried it yet.

I had to do this earlier this year. Goo Gone and plastic razor blades worked for me. Let the Goo Gone dwell.

The issue I had was that when the previous weights were removed, there was foam stuck the to wheel, not just adhesive. So when I applied the goo gone or whatever solvent, it never made it to the adhesive to dissolve it. I tried scoring the blobs to create areas where the solvent could get past the foam, but was never fully successful. I’ll give it another go with the suggestions everyone made. Thanks all.

If it's adhesive of almost any kind the 3m makes short work of it.,,,I also like to use it remove those little round mirrors people put on their door mirrors,,stuff a rag between the mirror and the housing,squirt some directly on foam part of the sticky thing and go do something else for a bit,,sometimes they even fall off.
