Let me begin with the fact that I am 100% a novice at detailing - I've actually never detailed - just soap and water!

BUT a while back my wife put one of those oval magnets on her car and after a long time in the Florida sun and storms it started to fall apart. We removed it to find this underneathView attachment 59428

There's no actual residue or particles on the surface of the car. The magnet came clean off without tearing or breaking. I've tried washing and even goo gone but like I said there is nothing left on the car - so I assume the paint is damaged somehow?

Someone on reddit suggested I tried a clay bar on that area? Just curious if that would work or if there was something else I should try. Is it repairable?

That is probably moisture under/in the clear or paint. You can try clay and polish but Ive not had good luck getting those out on cars I have seen with that problem

That's what I was afraid of...

If you've had no luck I might as well save $20 on the clay bar kit...

Is there any way to fix it? Professionally? If so is it worth fixing based on cost?

I have seen where magnetic signs over time will actually remove or severely degrade the clear coat by moving against it. The one instance is able to compound out the damage but on the other one there was nothing that could be done so it called for a repaint

It looks like it may be some fine scratching/abrasion. If that is the case do a test spot on it with some polish by hand. If that seems to work then proceed to finish it up.

If it is a milky appearance as if water or moisture was trapped underneath, then try heating the area up with a heat gun or hair dryer- just be sure to keep your hand on the paint in the area- if it is too hot for your hand then you are overheating the spot.

I just recently got a decal on my back windshield. I asked about magnets on the paint like that and the guy recommended not to do it. He said that they can hurt the clear coat of the car. They do move around and vibrate a bit. He said it traps moisture and dirt under it, of course dirt under something that vibrates is kinda like sandpaper moving on the paint. Not to mention that if its on the same spot long enough then you could get fading around the area as well. he said that people should remove them and clean under it often and to put it in a different place often as well to keep it from building up in one spot.

But I wouldnt skip the clay bar or trying anything due to others saying they havent had much luck. Your case might be different. Even if it greatly improves then I say it would be worth it. Clay it .. compound it, polish it, and wax it. I would absolutely do it with a machine.

Where are you located op, maybe a forum member is close and can offer some help/materials.

Is it cloudy looking in the paint? From the pics looks like ghosting try fine polish cleaner or just cleaner wax and do the whole panel gd luck.

I had a customer who had left one on for years and I asked them to remove it, it pulled the clear right off the paint was trashed.

Samething happened on a tahoe.Must be worse in fla when you leave them on for 2 years in the heat and humidity.
