I currently restoring the interior of 70 Chevelle convertible... I have the original seatbelts and buckles that I would like to make new again rather purchasing repros.. I know how to restore the color of the nylon fabric belt but the plastic black GM buckle is where I have the dilemma.. Overall the buckle is in good condition (no cracks) just faded with some minor scratches.. With that said. I'm assuming I can wet sand the plastic buckle (800 , 1500 , 2000, 4000) and use Meg Plastic X to bring out the color ? I don't have any spare buckles so want to get it right the first time.. I'm assuming this is like cleaning a headlight lens.. Any advise on the what to use or the best approach? Thanks in advanceFeed back please

I'd run down to a junkyard and pick up a few back seat buckles like yours, and test out on those. Then if you don't get the results your after, at least you didn't deface the original belt buckles.

Have you tried one of the various trim sealants like Wolfgang trim sealant, DLux, or ultima trim guard? Those seem to work well on exterior trim, and typically have to do battle with the elements.

If they don't work, your proposed sanding steps would make short work of them.
