There have been many different theories about the best way to clean finished leather. For many years, I was in the boat that specific leather cleaners needed to be used, regardless of if the leather is aniline, semi-aniline, or coated. Little by little, I came around that only the top portion, the coating, is being cleaner and that traditional aniline leather products were probably not doing a whole lot of good. They were still working, but their added cost and limited benefit made them soon obsolete.

1Z Einszett Plastic Vinyl Deep Cleaner Plastik Reiniger

This product has been a mainstay for many professional detailers for treated (coated) leather throughout the threads on the subject. There are, however, a few that feel that 1Z Deep Plastic is too harsh for leather. Due to that reason, I have never used it. The time has come, however, that I needed to really clean my leather from my 2000 Range Rover. I also thought this would be a good test when I clean and apply CarPro CQuartz Fabric & Leather onto my Mom’s BMW seats.

So, what is 1Z Deep Plastic? Here you go, straight from the source (1Z-USA):

“A concentrated deep cleaning detergent that removes stubborn grime, grease, scuff marks, stains, soot and polish residue without harsh or abrasive cleaners.

Use on the dashboard, steering wheel, shift knob, arm rests, finished leather and pedals. Leaves a clean, no-shine finish.”

THE TEST

All the seats were first cleaned with Optimum Power Clean, diluted 1:10 and 1:3. The 1:10 dilution was used for high traffic areas while 1:3 was used in stubborn spots. All leather was agitated with a leather brush, with feathered nylon bristles. This was about a week ago. I started thinking, could this be any cleaner?

Now, the first test… Will the 1Z remove more dirt that the Optimum Power Clean could not?

Due to this being the first time I had used this product on a new surface, I wanted to do a test in an inconspicuous spot. I chose the side of the passenger seat to see if the 1Z Deep Plastic could remove more grime that the Optimum Power Clean left behind.

With the tape line removed, even resized, you can clearly see that the left side of the picture (the side where the 1Z was applied, is clearly cleaner. Keep in mind, this was with no agitation. Just spray on – let dwell for about ten seconds – wipe off with a interior microfiber towel.

Here is the side of the seat, now completely clean thanks to 1Z Deep Plastic Cleaner:

Now that the testing was done, it was time to move on to the rest of the seats. For the rest of the cleaning, now that I know the 1Z Deep Plastic was going to be safe, I brought out the Mother’s detailing brush for any agitation that would be needed.

Here is the back of the passenger seat, all clean!

And here is passenger seat…

Clean rear passenger seat. Spray on – agitate – wipe off. That was the process used.

Right passenger seat being covered with product. An ample amount was used. Not too much, but enough to feel like the job was being done. As many of you know 1Z makes a fantastic spray bottle. The spray is even, and fairly wide.

THE DAMAGE

I came across a section on the back of the rear passenger seat, where there was quite a bit of dirt scuffed into the leather. I thought this would be a perfect test to see if 1Z Deep Plastic could take it out without the Optimum Power Clean pre-treatment (I did not treat the back of the rear seats with the OPC due to time constraints back a couple weeks ago.)

The victim:

The physician, applying its medicine:

The prognosis:
10752606073_11729a0151_h.jpg

Well, I don’t know about you but I’d say the prognosis is GREAT. For the purpose of the test, I did not agitate the cleaner, but rather let it dwell for about twenty seconds before wiping off with an interior microfiber towel. Despite the lack of agitation, the 1Z took the dirt right out and restored the leather to its natural look.

THE WILDCARD

Now, time to play devil’s advocate. Some may say, “You didn’t use the Optimum Power Clean at a high enough dilution for it to be effective against the kind of dirt that you encountered.”

Ah, yes. I thought someone may say that…

Behold, the ultimate test:

1Z Deep Plastic Cleaner (undiluted) vs. Optimum Power Clean (undiluted)

Now, is Optimum Power Clean safe undiluted on treated leather? Optimum says yes, though they say it can be diluted 1:3 or higher depending on the level of soil. I have read most professional detailers that do not use OPC undiluted on finished leather. This leather, as you can tell, needs some serious repair, which I plan on making (I will tell you my course of action at the bottom and please comment if you have a company in mind or plan of action that you feel would be superior to mine.)

1Z on top – Optimum on the bottom:

The Optimum side:

Honestly, I could not tell much of a difference so I opted to carry the test over to the seat back.

THE SEAT BACK RESULTS

To me, there is a clear tapeline, which means that both products improved the leather. That being said, if you look at the seat back results, there is only one clear winner:

AND THE WINNER IS…

1Z Einszett Plastic Vinyl Deep Cleaner Plastik Reiniger

The 1Z did a better job than the Optimum Power Clean (undiluted) at removing whatever grime was in the leather over years of use. The lower side is cleaner, so 1Z wins. Optimum Power Clean does, however, give you the option to dilute to your need, which makes it the more versatile all-purpose cleaner, but that being said with a product like 1Z Deep Plastic Cleaner, what more could you need!

MY LEATHER PLANS:

What I am trying to do is repair my leather without using a professional. I am thinking about using Leather World Technologies, who happen to make Leather Masters – the outstanding car leather care products. I have seen kits advertised online and on TV for these exact problems that I am having (as you can see in the pictures, plus a tear). If anyone has done this before, including using fillers and dyes, please comment or PM with any advice.

PROTECTING THE LEATHER:

My plan was to protect the leather with CarPro CQuartz Fabric and Leather, but the sprayer I got was busted, which caused the product to be wasted all over my gloves with every spray. I ended up removing the sprayer and just blobbing an applicator and applying that way, but it was very wasteful and completely frustrating. I used about half the bottle when most people use about two sprays per leather seat. A complete waste of money... No pictures were taken because my gloves were all covered in the coating, and the leather really didn’t change in appearance. I doubt the camera could pick anything up if my eyes couldn’t. There was a slight sheen but as it dried over the course of a few minutes it disappeared. When I do my mom’s black leather I will document it since it will show up better.

I welcome any questions, comments, criticism, and/or advice. Happy detailing!

Any plans to use it on the Porsche and (if i remember correctly) the AM? Thanks for the review. I'll take your word for it and buy me a bottle.

Great review too.

Have you tried the 1Z Gummi Fledge? I really like the results I get with it on door seals.

awesome! any chance the 1Z was removing some dye? hmm

Here's the kicker, before I tried this my mom wanted me to clean an old leather wallet of her's, dyed and coated. I used the usual Leather Masters stuff on it and it wasn't making a dent. Then I broke the 1Z Plastic Deep out and it brought the leather back to life.

I decided to apply the CarPro CQuartz Fabric & Leather onto it and before I did, I noticed the coating was removed and the leather was wearing bear.

I was extremely hesitant to use this product on anything in the interior; in fact, I was thinking about returning it after I saw the coating removed.

Two reasons why I did not: 1) I thought that the coating used on this high-end leather wallet would be very thin, because they wanted to give the appearance of aniline leather; and 2) all the detailers using it on their customers couldn't all be wrong. Now, I do know that some detailers still say that it is too harsh, but on this old Range Rover leather I did to run into a problem where any coating was breached nor was there any dye transfer from the leather - only coating to microfiber towel.

It has the potential to use take coatings off of leather and expose it. It is a powerful cleaner but, for most, it appears to be safe for coated automotive leather.

It says it is specifically safe for finished (coated) leather straight from the manufacturer. Optimum Power Clean claims the same, however we saw in the test, even undiluted, 1Z Plastic Deep was stronger.

If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate!

To be honest, no. First, the Aston Martin (my dad's - though I drive and take care of it probably more than him!) has 100% aniline leather, so natural leather cleaners, conditioners, and protectants need to be used on it. On my Porsche, while the leather is finished, I don't know if I would need the strength that the 1Z Plastic Deep gives. As you can imagine, I would not let a brand new (what! It's been almost a year...)

I know using it on the exotics would be a great stamp of approval, but I'm not the one that is making it. I'm sure somewhere on the forum you can see detailers using 1Z Deep on all types of cars with finished leather. By the way, great memory with the cars!

If you do buy a bottle I think you'll get use of it. It can be used on the interior and exterior. I'm sure a quick google search of the "1Z Plastic Deep Reviews" would show you how others are using this product. Happy detailing!

I just bought OPC. Now I need to buy this too. :bash:

Don't bang it too hard - I have both and have uses for each. If you recall at the beginning of the review, I initially used Optimum Power Clean, diluted at 1:10 and 1:3, to clean the seats. At the time, I thought that would take everything out of the seats and I wouldn't have to do this test (of course, now I'm glad I could potentially help other detailers who's reviews have helped me immensely.)

If you wanted to just keep OPC in your arsenal, I don't think you could go wrong. If you wanted to add this 1Z product, then that's just icing on the cake! Happy detailing!

What do you use for your Porsche leather?

I've been using Adam's Interior Detailer since its matte and darkens your leather a bit which i think it works great especially for most black euro leather which is more of a grayish/black. But that's the exact reason why i don't like it for American and Asian leathers, cause they're usually a darker shade of black and don't need to be darkened at all. I'm all out now and i'd like to hear your recommendation.

I have yet to try 1Z Cockpit Premium but i hear great reviews.

Thank you for reading and your compliment! I do have 1Z Gummi Fledge and like it a lot! A lot of people think it is unnecessary but I find it very helpful on all flexible seals. The only thing that I have been considering getting instead is Zymöl Seal or Swissvax Seal Feed. The Zymöl is is $30 for 8.5oz and the Swissvax is $69.00 for 250mL - quite expensive. I just don't know if the added cost justifies the product. Maybe someone will buy them and try it out? Not it!

$99 OEM Replacement on Ebay. This one is Passenger side, but with a little searching, I bet you can find Driver's side.

Genuine 03 06 Land Rover Range Rover Rear Right Passenger Leather Seat Cover | eBay

Thank you for doing that search for me. For the repairs, I think that the kit, plus some extras would actually end up being cheaper, plus I can do the armrests and passenger seat, which has seen some better days (spiderwebbing, cracks, but no tears). The only question is how close to OEM can the leather makers get it without me having to constantly re-tint the dye. Thanks for your input! If I take the easy way I will definitely take a look at the eBay option.

First, I have used 1Z Cockpit Premium and I LOVE it. In fact, I did a review of it vs. SONAX Dashboard Cleaner.

http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/product-reviews/70025-comparison-sonax-dashboard-vs-1z-cockpit.html

I didn't have any pictures but trust me, if you like factory finishes, you'll love the 1Z Cockpit. It has light cleaning ability and does not attract dust. The matte finish is just perfect.

I have recently tried SONAX Leather Cleaner & Conditioner on my Porsche leather because they say that it was designed for perforated seats, which is what I have (ventilated and heated). I will probably also try the Leather Masters Soft Cleaner, Vital Conditioner, and Protection Cream, but I don't want to take a chance on clogging the perforations.

I have also heard very, very good things about Swissvax leather care, even though it is quite pricey. Never had a chance to try it out... yet! If you have any other questions regarding the leather care, or the product, please don't hesitate!

Awesome review. I just bought from 1Z to try out.

Thank you very much! 1Z makes great products, just in general. 1Z Cockpit and 1Z Plastic Deep Cleaner make a great combo and can really tackle any job you have. If you have any other questions, please ask away!

I have also heard very, very good things about Swissvax leather care, even though it is quite pricey.

I recently used the Swissvax leather care cleaner and milk on my first detail job. The cleaner did an excellent job removing direct from my black leather. Further wipes with a damp towel proved the leather to be free of dirt. The leather milk went on thin and clean and left a matte supple look on the leather. While both products have a distinct smell of their own, it dissipates in no time. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the feedback! I have only heard good things about it, but still the price tag keeps me from pulling the trigger. I know very little is used, so that helps with the price but the Leather Masters products I have can be used on aniline leather, too. I wonder which one is more gentle, since that's really the name of the game for natural, uncoated leather. Anyone else happen to use both products and prefer one over the other?

Feel free to stop by and use some of my Swissvax on your leather seats.

Thank you for the review and testing! I think I'll have to add this to my interior cleanup regimen sooner than later! :xyxthumbs:
