BLACKFIRE Midnight Sun Spray Wax, spray car wax, aerosol wax

I was one of the lucky winners to get to try this new spray wax from Blackfire.

Before I get into my thoughts on the product, let me make some comments on spray waxes. Many people use spray waxes as a booster to an LSP. However, many spray waxes now are advertised to offer enough protection on their own. I personally find I am only using spray waxes for the most part. They are easy and quick enough to use that I use them almost every few weeks. That combined with a quick detailer sometimes used as a drying aid (which have polymers and a small amount of protection in them as well), my paint always seems to be well protected with excellent beading and sheeting characteristics. And of course very shiny :)

Am I fooling myself? Is my paint not as well protected as it could be if I were using traditional waxes or sealants more often? And as technology advances, what really is traditional now?

Its actually the need I personally have to use products like spray waxes and quick detailers that keep me from coating my car. Its part of my therapy.

Now on to the product. I have been using XMT Spray wax regularly. I really like the latest version of that. I have also used Meguiars Ultimate Spray wax (which was fine), Souveran Spray wax (which I didnt really like) and a few others I cant remember, oh and Meguiars NXT Spray wax which might be the worst detailing product of all time. One of the reasons I like spray waxes is they all smell great and ease of use.

Now on to Midnight Sun... first off, if anyone has used Pinnacle Crystal Mist Detailer, Midnight sun has a consistency very similar to that. I liken it almost to a lotion like feeling. In comparison, XMT is much thinner more like water. While XMT flashes and dissapears almost instantly, Midnight sun requires it to be spread out, and then wiped off. I did exactly that. I spread it out, it was visible on the paint, and then a few seconds later, wiped it off effortlessly. There was no streaking. Initially, I didnt feel the slickness, but that appeared after a few minutes, so perhaps there is a curing time of a few minutes. It has a pleasant scent, couldnt put my finger on exactly what it smells like, but it was nice.

It will be hard for me to truly test the durability of this product for the reasons I mentioned above. Since I use XMT the most now, to compare, this wax has a more luxurious feel, and leaves the paint a little slicker. Its so hard to say if it was any glossier or not but the looks are nice. I would probably use this wax as a great show car prep myself due to that extra slickness and luxurious feel.

Because it has carnuba content the directions advise not to apply to a hot surface.

Here are some photos, which show a shiny car, but any review requires at least some photos!

It rained later in the afternoon ( I swear I can make it rain by washing my car in the morning) so here is a nice water beading shot:

I did apply it to the rear window as well as it can be used on multiple exterior surfaces.

I also applied it to my garage queen 350Z. Prior to this I had only used Souveran and Crystal Mist on that car and the Midnight Sun made the paint as slick as a coat of Souveran would. No photos.

Its a nice spray wax and worthy of the Blackfire name!

Great review, I love spray waxes too, I have a bottle of Sonax Brilliant Shine on the way and I'm planning on getting Midnight soon

I am a big fan of Pinnacle XMT (pink formula) and wondering whether to try the new green formula or go for the Blackfire. Blackfire Midnight Sun paste does not darken the paint (seems warmer) as much as the Pinnacle.

To me the Pink formula and the new green formula are similar in feel and look. My impressions vs the two are the new formula might last a little longer (durability has been excellent) and its less expensive.

But they are both totally different from Midnight Sun Spray Wax. It has a very different feel. I am not sure if I can tell that it looks any different, my car is shiny with all of them and all of them bead water very well.

Pinnacle feels more like a detailer on steroids in terms of application, looks, and durability. I would suspect Blackfire would be closer to Optimum Car Wax ...thicker formula so a tad less easy to use.

I think the newer version is has even more steroids then.

Ive never tried Optimum Car wax, but yes Blackfire is definitely thicker than XMT. It was still easy to use though. On a cool car, sprayed on, spread out, wiped off. No hard buffing required. XMT kinda flashes almost instantly so there is hardly anything if at all to wipe away.

Thanks for taking the time to post such an outstanding review Jaret. Your observations are spot on - BLACKFIRE is more "substantial" than XMT in its formulation, thus providing even longer lasting protection. Try BLACKFIRE as a drying aid next time you wash the car, you'll be pleasantly surprised! :dblthumb2:

I never thought to use a spray wax as a drying aid. I have used quick detailers with great results. Yes I will give it a try!!!

I have been pretty impressed with the beading longetivity with XMT, so if Blackfire is even better, it will be excellent.

Quick followup... I washed my car this weekend and the paint was very slick. My microfiber sponge just slid right across the surface. So far so good :)

I ordered some Midnight Sun this weekend so we shall see.

I did not drive in any rain this week, it rained at a night a few times and a few showers. Therefore the car was relatively clean with just the water spots and dust that had settled when the water dried. So instead of a full car wash, I just sprayed my car with high pressure water, and then wiped dry with the aid of UWW and in 15 minutes my car was clean. The dirt really didnt stick to the car, it washed off. So the claim of this wax making the paint slick and easier to clean can be said to be true!

I wanted to update my post. I went on vacation and my car sat outside in the hot Florida sun for 4 weeks without being washed! This spray wax held up well! Still very strong water beading.

When I finally did get around to washing my car this weekend, it was very hot again, and I used Nicks advice of trying this as a drying aid. It worked well. I used it more sparingly as a drying aid then when I initially applied it. No issues with streaking and left the paint nice and slick again.

To summarize, durability seems good, slickness and looks are excellent, and of course it smells great!

When I use a spray wax there are a few things I do to test them out. The biggest test and almost all spray waxes that I have used fail it. This is spraying on the spray wax on a hot (engine temperature) hood.
The 1st thing happens is STREAKING. That to me is a product failure and I usually just trash the product and use the bottle for other detailing purposes.

I will not spray in the sun as my ride is black and would never do anything in the sun with it so I will not use that as a guideline.

So I decided to test Blackfire Cranauba Spray wax with the hot hood test and I was actually thinking it would fail.

Well to my surprise it passed with FLYING COLORS. Not only did it pass the test (no streaking), this product has exceeded my expectations. The gloss it leaves after a spray and wipe is 2nd to none.

People, IMO this is one of the best spray waxes I have used. Try a bottle and see.
