Review: Detailer’s Pro Trim Detailer

Introduction:

After the pleasant experience with Blackfire Wet Diamond Spray Wax, the new DP aerosols seemed like a natural. Of the new products, this is the one I had the most reservations about. I'd seen other manufacturer's aerosol trim offerings and people seemed to like it but I just didn't get it. Thought it a good way to waste product and make a mess. But then again, what do I know?

My neighbor kindly volunteered his 2002 Mini Cooper to be the test bed. (He's a plumber and we traded services.) Turned out to be almost the ideal car for this review because it has a fair amount of the pebbled trim all over and a couple of intricate plastic grills. For completeness, wheels were cleaned with Griot's Garage Heavy Duty Wheel Cleaner & various brushes + sponge. Tires with Zep Citrus Degreaser (4:1) and Tuff Shine brush. Foamed and 2 bucket washed with CG Citrus Wash & Clear. Dried with WW MF. Clayed with clay substitute sponge & ONR (clay lube dilution). The paint (except for the black roof) was swirl free so decided to use Megs D151 with Flex 3401 + LC CCS Green & PCXP + 4" LC Flat Orange on the small areas just to clean it up a bit. Topped with DP Quick Wax (review to come). Tires dressed with Surf City Garage Beyond Black (in keeping with the aerosol theme -- he wanted high gloss). The trim was OK - just a little oxidized with some TOGW.

Thanks to Corey again for providing the format.

Product Claims:

From AutoGeek site - Detailer’s Pro Series Trim Detailer, exterior trim spray, black plastic trim spray, molding spray

"Spray on a coat of durable trim protection!

Save time and enjoy the look of dark, detailed trim with Detailer's Trim Detailer. This aerosol spray quickly coats trim and tires to provide a low gloss, new-rubber finish. Exterior trim will look dark with a subtle, satin shine to complement any vehicle. Detailer's Trim Detailer offers excellent protection to keep trim and tires looking better than new.

It's easy to put the finishing touch on tires and trim with Detailer's Trim Detailer. This is a special polymer spray that bonds to the rubber to offer UV protection and water resistance. The coating lasts through rain showers and even a few car washes. Your vehicle's dark trim, moldings, and tires will look instantly revived with one to two light coats of Detailer's Trim Detailer.

The clear coating enhances rubber without making it look shiny or greasy. We call this satin finish the concours look. It's what you see at car shows and in showrooms. Best of all, it's easy to get this look. Detailer's Trim Detailer simply sprays on. No need to wipe or buff. The coating dries in a matter of minutes and will not sling from tires.

For detailers, Detailer's Trim Detailer saves time and delivers consistent, impressive results. Just spray and walk away!"

Preparation:

Scrubbed trim with OPC + a brush and then thoroughly washed the car with CG CWC and dried.

Application:

Apply sparingly to surface. I used very short bursts and it kept the overspray under control. Note - I applied inside my garage. If you try outdoors, no promises. I followed immediately with a MF for low gloss look per directions. For the smaller areas, I sprayed on MF and applied.

Observations:

Nice, light smell. Very easy to control. Covers evenly - even on the dreaded pebbled trim. Used it on the cabin intake grills and the decorative stuff on the front fenders and it made short work of the those.

Final Observations and Summary:

I am writing the review on DP Trim Detailer first because I really liked it. Yes, I was wrong.

If you have a lot of pebbled plastic on your car or intricate grill areas that require dressing, this is your product. I was impressed with the control of the spray and how evenly and quickly that I could cover the areas With a quick wipe, it left a dark, even, new look on some faded hard trim.

Comments and questions are encouraged. Thanks for viewing!

Thanks for the review.

I have used Adam's In and Out spray and seems to produce similar results. The only negative with Adam's was the label was full all sorts warnings about aerosol content.

Interesting, I just used mine yesterday for the first time, sprayed it on my running boards and a test spot on my tonneau cover, it still hasnt dried/soaked it. Ill have my review up this week when I get a chance.

Thanks Al. Must admit I didn't look but aerosols were abused in many ways.

I wiped immediately and was dry to the touch.

Your review addresses all of the product aspects. It really looks like a nice product and I too am curious to it's durability..

Great review as always Mike. :props:

Sorry guys. Missed this one.

It held up OK. It is not super durable like Wolfgang ETS or UTTG. However, it is so easy to apply by comparison that reapplying every few weeks isn't that much of a chore - particularly if it is an intricate piece.

No, but I've seen great reviews - mainly on the engine bay. There I still use CD2.

I have DP's Engine Degreaser. I'm still using Sonus Motorkote on the engine. I'm curious how well Pro Trim Detailer would hold up against salt/sand vs the Sonus product. I'm looking for maximum durability and protection. My car sees frequent beach use.

I've been using for a couple months now I like a lot better than Adam's in&out spray. For Durability it comes down to weather in the summer I got a couple weeks out of it. For winter not sure yet.

Okay can I ask the dumb question? Is it harmful to paint and is it easily removable? Because one of the ways I could see using this is to spray my black, honeycomb patterned grill. But I don't think I could do it without a lot of overspray on the hood and bumper. Could I just wipe the excess off with a MF towel and some quick detail spray?

If it is anything like stoners shine spray stuff at all, then yes of course! It would be absolutely impossible to spray black trim without getting any on the paint

Once I've used up my Sonus Motorkote I may try DP Pro Trim Detailer on the engine.

I used this for the first time today. I like the finish that it puts on trim and it covers very well. The only thing I don't like is that it is aerosol. I know this was already covered, but I don't know about durability yet. If I remember, I will comment again about durability.

I've been using this for a little while now. I have to admit that it is growing on me, but I think I'm still switching over to the Wolfgang Trim Sealant. The only thing I don't like is if it is slightly windy outside, I have to practically put the can on top of what I'm trying to cover. In addition, I have to be concerned about where the over spray is going.

Like I said, good coverage, I love the deep satin finish and it seems to be pretty durable. It's been a few weeks on my truck and through some nasty rain in the N.O. area and a couple of washings and it still lasts. I left a tiny corner uncovered on the piece underneath my bumper and I can still clearly see the uncovered spot.
