Review: Meguiars Shampoo Plus (D111)
Introduction:
This product comes from the Detailers Line of Meguiars Products. The product used here was paid for in full by one of our L2D members, as it is a product he regularly uses. A couple months ago Dalton offered to send a sample for review. Thank you Dalton / (DLB) / {Bob]! I’ve used it probably 3 times since receiving it and washed 4-5 cars total with it.
Details:
1.- Packaging: N/A
2.- Directions: 1 ounce per gallon
3.- Consistency: Thin (See video)
4.- Color: Blue
5.- Scent: Soap
6.- Size: 1 Gallon
7.- Price at time of Review: $14.99
8.- Manufacturer: Meguiars, Inc
9.- Made in: The USA
Additional products used for prep, during application, or removal:
1.- (2) buckets with Grit Guards
2.- MF Wash Mitt (Carrand)
3.- LC Big Blue Cube
4.- Waffle Weave Towel
Conditions:
I’ve used this product in temperatures ranging from probably about 40 – 80 degrees. I haven’t noticed any real difference in the functional properties.
Application:
I decided to wash both Saturn SL’s (first “Blue”, and second “Green”) on this fine morning (a few weeks ago). I started by washing the wheels and tires of Blue and rinsing them. After thoroughly rinsing the vehicle I mixed about 3 oz. of Meguiars Shampoo Plus into about 3 gallons of water. Then I mixed the solution together with my arm and dropped the Grit Guard in. Finally, I circulated it a little more with a quick jet of water to activate the suds.
My first observation while mixing the solution was that the product is very thin and easy to mix. I also found it to have good lubricity. Lubricity I would rank it in the top 5 of the car shampoos I’ve worked with which mean it’s better than average.
Video: Mixing Wash Solution
Throughout the different times I used this product I used my usual mf chenille wash mitt but during the session in which I took the majority of my pictures and all of my video I used the Blue Cube sponge. With this tool I found I got a lot more suds per solution and less “non-sudsing” solution on the car during the wash (as you would expect regardless of shampoo type). I’m slightly conflicted (when am I not?) but personally I think I would recommend the previous media (a wash mitt) over the sponge type media that I used here.
First the roof and windows were washed and rinsed. Next the hood, trunk lid, and then the verticals were completed. As usual I cleaned my mitt (or cube) in this particular case with the hose after each section. Usually I also dip it in the rinse bucket and scrub it on the guard there but I’ve come to believe that may be a waste of my time since I spray the media out so well with the hose. After thoroughly spraying out the mitt or sponge I then wring or squeeze the rinse water out of the mitt or sponge as the case may be so as not to dilute my wash bucket. Then I dip the wash media back in the wash solution and repeat.

Next I switched to my flood attachment and rinsed the car one last time, following the sheet of water off of the car in order to remove as much water as possible before towel time. After quickly toweling off Blue I took a few quick pictures and a video.
Video: Clean and Dry
Then I moved Blue next to the street and got started on Green. Green received the same treatment however it did not have the wheels and tires washed like Blue. After Green was dried I added some DP Tire Gel (Original Formula) to Blues tires. After viewing the remainder of the media please rejoin me for the Pros, Cons, Further Testing, and Final Observations.

Further Testing:
Lubricity: As I’m finishing up this review and realizing how similar in price this product is to Meguiars Gold Class I find myself wishing I had compared them side-by-side. With all the recent wash reviews and the fact I use UPGW on the Sky it’s been a long time since I used MGC. So to compare a couple of their traits I just set up a test for lubricity and found them to be ENTIRELY equal in this department. I placed a small fixed amount of each product into equal amounts of water and mixed them well before testing.
Video: Lubricity Comparison
My wife also tested them and came to the same conclusion. We found excellent lubricity for both products. After this video was taken I filled the water the rest of the way, stirred again, and tested again with the same results.
Suds: (Surprising find)
For those interested in suds I also set up a suds test. I dumped half of the water out from the previous test and then refilled it with the tap turned up this time to create a few suds. Meguiars Shampoo Plus better maintained its suds by a wide margin. In the following pictures MSP is on the right and MGC on the left.

10:47 this morning (7 minutes from start)
11:07 this morning (27 minutes from start)
11:40 this morning (60 minutes from start)
Pros:
1.- Price
2.- Mixes Easily
3.- Rinses easily
4.- Lubricity
5 - Long lasting suds
6.- Cleaning Ability
???
1 - Scent not my favorite but this is the detailers line so I don’t think scent was on the agenda
Cons:
1 – N/A
Final Observations:
In my opinion this products greatest asset is its price and lubricity followed by suds and then cleaning ability. I can’t say it is the strongest cleaning car wash I’ve used but its above average. Lubricity (as I mentioned) is above average but I don’t think it’s on the same level as Duragloss or Ultima. This product did not seem to add any gloss but rinsed off easy and left a clean streak free finish. The price is good right in line with that of Meguiars Gold Class. Being that this is the Detailers line the fact that it mixes easier with the water than does the Megs GC is slightly note worthy in my opinion. In the future I will compare this product side-by-side to MGC and get back to you on how it compares in the cleaning department. I would recommend this product to anybody that washes a lot of cars and is looking for a safe (good lubricity) car wash at a budget price. When looking at this and Megs Gold Class I was certain I would tell you to get whichever is cheaper or that I prefer MGC but after some of the side by side testing the Shampoo Plus seems like a slightly better product. This product is a sleeper and doesn’t get the credit it deserves. Now I’m very curious whether it outperforms MGC in cleaning ability… If they are equal in that department and looks then I would say to buy which ever one is a better price at the time. Thanks again to Dalton.
