Hello All,

As was promised to Meghan here is my review of the New Hydro-Tech 6.5" buffing pads that were provided to me by Meghan & AutoGeek. In this review I will also review the Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover Combo provided by me!:D

I was not feeling to well so I only did the hood of the test subject which is a Dark Metallic Blue 2003 GMC Yukon. This paint is in need of serious help.

The process.

Wash with DP extreme foam
Clay with Meguiers clay and ONR clay lube
Buff the passengers side with Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover and LC CCS Orange 6.5" pad on a Griot's Radium Orbital setting 5.5.
Buff the Drivers side with WGTSR and the New Cyan Hydro-Tech pad o same machine
Polish with Wolfgang Finishing glaze driver side with the Tangerine Hydro-tech and the passenger side with the White CCS.

To be totally fair each side was done with 3 panel passes only! The results were remarkably close. Here are the pictures of the driver side and the passengers side following the Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover process only.

If anything I thought the New HT Cyan pad seemed to "finish" a little better? One thing I did notice was it took less polish on the HT pads than on the CCS pads. I'm going out on a limb here but I'm thinking as much as 20% less. It seemed I could work a larger area with the HT pads than with the CCS pads without any danger of it drying out.

Another thing I noticed right away was the manufacturing Quality of the HT pads VS. the CCS pads. The CCS pads always seem to be out of round and just a little off and sloppy, the Hydro pads were very well manufactured and seemed to have much better quality control and were in fact round. I also like the contoured edges on the HT pads VS. the straight cut edges on the CCS pads.

One odd note (to me anyway) was that the Tangerine Pad in the HT line was stiffer to the touch than the Cyan pad. In the CCs pads it seemed the denser the foam the more cut, If I used these right the Blue (CYAN) was softer yet it is meant to be more aggressive. That being said I did not have any issue with the Cyan not cutting or the Tangerine not polishing out well. This paint was in major need and both the CCS and the HT pads preformed flawlessly (except that the CCS pads are out of round and a little harder to control close to edges because of it).

The finial polish was done on respective sides with the Tangerine and White pads using the Wolfgang Finishing Glaze. Both sides finished out very nice and I was totally pleased. Both side were polished again with 3 panel passes to keep it equal and after all was said and done I could not tell any difference in the finished paint. Again I felt the HT pad used less product and had a much less tendency to dry out. After the 3 panel passes I felt I could have kept working the product with the Hydro-Tech pads but felt I was all done with the CCS pads. Here is a poor picture of the tape line splitting the two sides after the complete process less LSP.

Also it must be noted that this was my first time using the Wolfgang Pair as well so I can't compare it to any past experiences. Also I must add that I was totally impressed with the Wolfgang Combo. If you could have seen this with your naked eye before and after it would have blown you away to know this was only a 3 panel pass project. I plan in the future to compare the WG products to some others I have when I finish this Yukon.

Here are the pads at the end of the project, you can see that the CCS pads seem to be more saturated than the Hydro-Tech pads. This was also evident when I cleaned them, much more cleaning was needed on the CCS pads over the HT pads.

The LSP that was used was DP MAX WAX and A final wipe with FK425. The results are very respectable. There are a couple of RIDS here and there but all in all it turned out very nice.

In closing I would think these Hydro-Tech pads are worth a try, I think the line needs to be expanded to say a gray AIO type pad, but for a 2 pad combo these are sweet. I felt they did what they are supposed to and kept the polish on the paint. I also really liked the high quality of the pad it's self, round not oval, very good hook and loop backing and the rounded edge gave better visibility of the working surface. I will give the HT pads two thumbs up :dblthumb2: & order the Hydro-Techs over the CCS in the future!

Also two thumbs up:dblthumb2: to the Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover Combo...I really like them and they are my favorite polishes to date.

I hope this review helps some out there.

I would like to thank Meghan and AutoGeek for the opportunity to try out and review these pads. :props:If you have any questions I will try and answer them.

Great rev, now just have to wait to order me some as AG now has the 5.5.

On a side now how do you like the GG DA? I am on the fence about which one to upgrade my org. PC to the new PC or the GG DA.

Thanks!

I like the GG DA a lot. It will run the 6.5" pads without any trouble and any amount of pressure you want to apply. I think the PCXP with 5.5" pads and the GG with 6.5" pads are about equal. I would buy the Griot's again with out a doubt. Just my .02!

Great review and results! I have really been wanting to try both the HT pads and Wolfgang pair, lucky you. The fact that these pads require less product and finish so well is very attractive. I agree with your thought on expanding the pad choices. Mostly I would like to see a HT pad for LSP's. Same concept, keep wax on the paint and out of the pad (I seem to have a hard time getting wax out of LC blue flat/red ccs pads).

(And that white CCS does look oval)

Thank You, I'm not much of a typer so it took a while:p

The Orange one used to look that way too...worse, but I took some Scissors to it!

I really liked the WG Combo, It was very easy to use and easy to tell when it was finished working. I would really recommend these polishes to people just starting out, great results and as you can see, they are very capable of doing some major correction. I also felt they are forgiving as far as leaving marring and swirls behind to clean up...virtually none! I felt after the Hydro-Tech Cyan and the Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover I could have applied LSP and had a great process that looked awesome.

My thoughts exactly on the expanded HT pad, one for LSP/AIO application that would give the same benefits as these do to polishes. I'm thinking we will be seeing a lot more from this series of pads in the future as these get out there.

I'm Very happy with the HT pads as well as the WG Polishes, anyone on the fence on trying either should give them a GO!:buffing:

Harleyguy,

Thanks!

I did a 16"X16" test area on both sides before doing the rest of the hood to help determine the 3 pass test and did an IPA after the WGTSR on those. My finding was as mentioned that the HT pad was just a little more on the "finished" side than the CCS Orange. (tried to get a picture but it didn't turn out) I felt both did equal correction.

One thing I forgot to mention in my above review was that I felt that the HT pads kept their density after being exposed to the polishes and I felt the CCS pads have a tendency to become softer as they soak up polish. Hope that helps.

I agree about the soaking up polish.Glad to see you did an ipa wipedown that gave you a real idea if anything was left behind or hiding

Great review!!!!!
I am looking into getting pads, and a polisher. Just for my own use on two cars.
And these new pads are looking very nice. I too would like to see maybe a third and finer pad. I do like the idea of a flat pad with full contact, now I just need to decide on pad size, backing plate size, and a polisher. :dblthumb2:

Excellent review! Lots of good info here-Thank you

This is an awesome review, thanks for sharing.

Am I crazy, or did you not mention what machine you used to polish the vehicle's hood?

LOL I had take another look at the pic, good work.

With nothing but good reviews I almost have to order a couple of each HT pad, which I am.

Griots, speed 5.5

I got a chance to use these pads during the 101 class and they are some very nice pads. I will be replacing my CCS pads with these

Again your Welcome,

A4 1.8tqm got it, Griot's @ 5.5 speed for the WGTSR and Griot's 4.5 speed for the Finishing glaze.

LOL I had take another look at the pic, good work.
LOL. Have Scissors will travel.

Me TOO!:xyxthumbs:

Thanks for the review. Spot on!

If I may add my own experience, I'd say the Cyan besides looking stiffer does not haze the paint at all.
I was expecting to behave like the yellow CCS pads, but the truth is, it finishes great. Zero haze!!!

Another thing I noticed right away is that the pad stays firm under load and heat. I've used other orange foam pads and they tend to soften up after a few passes. They tend to collapse a little if you will, sorta like get a soft spongy feel.
The Cyan pads stay firm no matter how much pressure you put on, and they STAY COOL, they do not heat up as much as other pads I've used. I like them so much, I ordered some more. Good bye orange pads! :props:

As for the Tangerine, I have them, but haven't used them yet

WOW! That is a really good review.

I love that picture of the Wolfgang products sitting ontop of the microfiber.

Those new HT pads sound really good.

I was debating what pads to include in my order, but I think I may have to go with some HT pads for the polishing, and maybe 2 or 3 finishing CCS pads.

Nice work!

That was a very well presented and informative review. I will definitely try some of these pads when the time comes to order nes pads. :dblthumb2:
