Review: Poorboy’s World Trim Restorer
Introduction:
I’ve been meaning to get to work on my terribly faded Saturn SL bumpers and was planning to use UTTG on one and 303 AP on the other. Dark Horse (Tad) sent me a surprise a little while back (a sample of PBTR) so I decided to do a review on it while restoring the bumpers on Frankenstein. Thank you Tad! While I was reading a thread on PB TR about a week ago I found some application tips from Tuscarora Dave and Pockets. I tried to incorporate some of those tips although I didn’t have a foam brush available so I had to improvise. For some comparison in this review I decided to go ahead and use UTTG and 303AP on a couple small squares of the front bumper.
Product Description (from AG website):
Sharp, crisp black trim accents any car, truck or SUV! Bring back trim that is in poor condition! Touching up the trim with Poorboy’s Trim Restorer will provide the final polishing step in your quest for the perfect finish.
Your car could be spotlessly clean, but dull, gray trim will detract from the overall visual impression. Not only does applying Trim Restorer positively affect the aesthetics of the car, but it offers protection from deterioration as well.

Method of Preparation, Application, and noted Observations:
I started by spraying the bumpers down with a hose. Then I sprayed full strength ARO on them and allowed it to dwell for a minute or two. After scrubbing the bumpers with a nylon brush I rinsed them clean and then also wiped them down with a wet mf towel dipped in DP RWG. I then rinsed a final time before allowing drying for about 30 minutes in the sun. I then taped off two small squares for our contrast products.
Next I poured a small amount of PB TR onto the tip of my brush. After covering the first few inches of bumper I went ahead and poured a slightly larger amount onto my brush and began applying liberally across the entirety of the faded bumpers (excluding the two taped off squares). The TR went on easily and the brush worked well for applying it thick, while not so thick that it would run. The appearance of the TR was very nice and rather wet and it seemed to shimmer in the sunlight. I assumed this would pass as it dried.
After taking a 50/50 shot of the TR I moved on to the application of UTTG and 303AP. I had reservation about applying the UTTG in the sun but I went ahead and went for it. It was applied using the Ultima TTG applicator. I applied the UTTG a lot thinner than I had the TR as Ultima product should not be applied in thick coats. 303AP was applied with an AG foam applicator. I applied it a lot thicker then I normally do. I literally drenched the material with 303 by applying one time after the other in immediate succession. Normally I wipe 303 off after a few minutes but due to the goal here I just “walked away”.
After cleaning my applicators and sending them off to dry I came back out and snapped some more pictures. I discovered a couple bugs had been lured to the scent of the wild coconuts and met their demise for their greedy ways. Bella had accompanied me during the checkup and she was inspired by the scent to go locust hunting. After snapping the pictures it was off for a ride in Skybaby to get some lunch and a couple videos.
A tip from Pockets in the thread I mentioned earlier suggested I come back after 20 minutes and wipe down the area with a cotton cloth. However as my bumpers were very faded I allowed the product to remain in keeping with a portion of Dave’s method. At the time I planned to wash the bumper later (also in keeping with Daves method). When I checked on the front bumper (first 2 and then 6 hours) later the appearance of the TR remained as it had when originally applied. It still looked as though it would be wet but was actually dry to the touch. (As was the UTTG and 303) At this point I decided not to wash the front bumper.
After taking some more pictures I turned the car around to get it facing the sun again for yet more pictures. Then I took some product to blend the tapeline enough to where only a thin line remained. Unfortunately I need to leave that thin line for durability testing comparisons. The UTTG test area had a bit of a faded line showing through it just as it had when I applied it, so I quickly applied another thin coat. The second coat erased what was left of the faded stripe.
The next morning I took a couple shots of the water that had collected on the front bumper. TR and UTTG beaded while 303AP did not. When I got home from work Monday night (after this review was thought to be complete) I discovered small dots on the bumper. Well, I should have buffed the area off as specified. I touched the TR and it felt dry. Then I rubbed it harder and realized it was actually still sticky. So, I grabbed a towel and buffed it dry. After doing this the gloss was taken down a notch and it felt nice, dry, and smooth. This morning and tonight I checked again and there were no more issues. Next time I’ll be sure to buff it! (Duh)
Note a lot of the pictures throughout show TR before I buffed it dry. The last few pictures (26, 27, and 28, as well as the last video are after buffing the TR. Please review the pictures and videos before rejoining me for the pros, cons, and summary.

Pros:
1.- Smooth dark and restored appearance
2.–Apply in direct sunlight (or shade)
3.- Not much product is needed
4.- Smells really great (but after seeing that bug meet his demise I wouldn’t recommend it)
5.- Dry to the touch (After buffing J)
6.- Simple application for the finish it provides
7.- Kills bugs dead? J
Cons:
1.- None so far (Testing Durability)
???:
1.- You know you have been using Ultima products too long when: You don’t buff something you should have. Seriously though, what was I thinking. I knew I was supposed to buff it dry but in my defense it did feel dry. I should have pressed harder.
2.- I considered completely revising the review so it would be a better portrait of the product. In other words removing half of the shiny photos of TR and leaving out the incorrect application (lack of buffing) but the review would have lost all authenticity in my opinion.
Summary of appearance for all 3 products:
Poor Boys World Trim Restorer has really blown me away initially. It darkened the grey plastic probably to the level it was when new 13 years ago. It offers a nice dark finish with a hint of gloss.
Ultima Trim & Tire Guard was up to the task of restoring the bumper as well but offered a more matte appearance while refusing to darken the grey rubber to quite the same level. It was the least streaky.
In terms of appearance 303 Aerospace Protectant fell somewhere between the other two products. The gloss of 303AP was less then but closer to that of TR. The darkening effect fell between the other two products.
Note: Keep in mind that appearances listed are the result of the application method previously described. Also bear in mind that the “After” pictures were taken between 2-40 hours after application. Check back for weekly updates to the appearance of these products.
Summary of application for durability test:
TR was applied in one very thick coat with a paintbrush. One small area that appeared too thick after a couple hours of drying time was smoothed with a foam applicator pad. The next day TR was buffed completely dry.
303AP was applied in similar excess fashion but with a foam applicator only, and was not buffed dry at any point
UTTG was applied much thinner but a second coat was applied after 6 hours. Neither coat was buffed dry at any point.
