Review: Poorboy’s World Trim Restorer

Introduction:
I’ve been meaning to get to work on my terribly faded Saturn SL bumpers and was planning to use UTTG on one and 303 AP on the other. Dark Horse (Tad) sent me a surprise a little while back (a sample of PBTR) so I decided to do a review on it while restoring the bumpers on Frankenstein. Thank you Tad! While I was reading a thread on PB TR about a week ago I found some application tips from Tuscarora Dave and Pockets. I tried to incorporate some of those tips although I didn’t have a foam brush available so I had to improvise. For some comparison in this review I decided to go ahead and use UTTG and 303AP on a couple small squares of the front bumper.

Product Description (from AG website):
Sharp, crisp black trim accents any car, truck or SUV! Bring back trim that is in poor condition! Touching up the trim with Poorboy’s Trim Restorer will provide the final polishing step in your quest for the perfect finish.
Your car could be spotlessly clean, but dull, gray trim will detract from the overall visual impression. Not only does applying Trim Restorer positively affect the aesthetics of the car, but it offers protection from deterioration as well.

Method of Preparation, Application, and noted Observations:
I started by spraying the bumpers down with a hose. Then I sprayed full strength ARO on them and allowed it to dwell for a minute or two. After scrubbing the bumpers with a nylon brush I rinsed them clean and then also wiped them down with a wet mf towel dipped in DP RWG. I then rinsed a final time before allowing drying for about 30 minutes in the sun. I then taped off two small squares for our contrast products.
Next I poured a small amount of PB TR onto the tip of my brush. After covering the first few inches of bumper I went ahead and poured a slightly larger amount onto my brush and began applying liberally across the entirety of the faded bumpers (excluding the two taped off squares). The TR went on easily and the brush worked well for applying it thick, while not so thick that it would run. The appearance of the TR was very nice and rather wet and it seemed to shimmer in the sunlight. I assumed this would pass as it dried.
After taking a 50/50 shot of the TR I moved on to the application of UTTG and 303AP. I had reservation about applying the UTTG in the sun but I went ahead and went for it. It was applied using the Ultima TTG applicator. I applied the UTTG a lot thinner than I had the TR as Ultima product should not be applied in thick coats. 303AP was applied with an AG foam applicator. I applied it a lot thicker then I normally do. I literally drenched the material with 303 by applying one time after the other in immediate succession. Normally I wipe 303 off after a few minutes but due to the goal here I just “walked away”.
After cleaning my applicators and sending them off to dry I came back out and snapped some more pictures. I discovered a couple bugs had been lured to the scent of the wild coconuts and met their demise for their greedy ways. Bella had accompanied me during the checkup and she was inspired by the scent to go locust hunting. After snapping the pictures it was off for a ride in Skybaby to get some lunch and a couple videos.
A tip from Pockets in the thread I mentioned earlier suggested I come back after 20 minutes and wipe down the area with a cotton cloth. However as my bumpers were very faded I allowed the product to remain in keeping with a portion of Dave’s method. At the time I planned to wash the bumper later (also in keeping with Daves method). When I checked on the front bumper (first 2 and then 6 hours) later the appearance of the TR remained as it had when originally applied. It still looked as though it would be wet but was actually dry to the touch. (As was the UTTG and 303) At this point I decided not to wash the front bumper.
After taking some more pictures I turned the car around to get it facing the sun again for yet more pictures. Then I took some product to blend the tapeline enough to where only a thin line remained. Unfortunately I need to leave that thin line for durability testing comparisons. The UTTG test area had a bit of a faded line showing through it just as it had when I applied it, so I quickly applied another thin coat. The second coat erased what was left of the faded stripe.
The next morning I took a couple shots of the water that had collected on the front bumper. TR and UTTG beaded while 303AP did not. When I got home from work Monday night (after this review was thought to be complete) I discovered small dots on the bumper. Well, I should have buffed the area off as specified. I touched the TR and it felt dry. Then I rubbed it harder and realized it was actually still sticky. So, I grabbed a towel and buffed it dry. After doing this the gloss was taken down a notch and it felt nice, dry, and smooth. This morning and tonight I checked again and there were no more issues. Next time I’ll be sure to buff it! (Duh)
Note a lot of the pictures throughout show TR before I buffed it dry. The last few pictures (26, 27, and 28, as well as the last video are after buffing the TR. Please review the pictures and videos before rejoining me for the pros, cons, and summary.

Pros:
1.- Smooth dark and restored appearance

2.–Apply in direct sunlight (or shade)
3.- Not much product is needed
4.- Smells really great (but after seeing that bug meet his demise I wouldn’t recommend it)
5.- Dry to the touch (After buffing J)
6.- Simple application for the finish it provides
7.- Kills bugs dead? J

Cons:
1.- None so far (Testing Durability)

???:
1.- You know you have been using Ultima products too long when: You don’t buff something you should have. Seriously though, what was I thinking. I knew I was supposed to buff it dry but in my defense it did feel dry. I should have pressed harder.
2.- I considered completely revising the review so it would be a better portrait of the product. In other words removing half of the shiny photos of TR and leaving out the incorrect application (lack of buffing) but the review would have lost all authenticity in my opinion.

Summary of appearance for all 3 products:

Poor Boys World Trim Restorer has really blown me away initially. It darkened the grey plastic probably to the level it was when new 13 years ago. It offers a nice dark finish with a hint of gloss.

Ultima Trim & Tire Guard was up to the task of restoring the bumper as well but offered a more matte appearance while refusing to darken the grey rubber to quite the same level. It was the least streaky.

In terms of appearance 303 Aerospace Protectant fell somewhere between the other two products. The gloss of 303AP was less then but closer to that of TR. The darkening effect fell between the other two products.

Note: Keep in mind that appearances listed are the result of the application method previously described. Also bear in mind that the “After” pictures were taken between 2-40 hours after application. Check back for weekly updates to the appearance of these products.

Summary of application for durability test:
TR was applied in one very thick coat with a paintbrush. One small area that appeared too thick after a couple hours of drying time was smoothed with a foam applicator pad. The next day TR was buffed completely dry.
303AP was applied in similar excess fashion but with a foam applicator only, and was not buffed dry at any point
UTTG was applied much thinner but a second coat was applied after 6 hours. Neither coat was buffed dry at any point.

Another excellent review! Where do you find the time to do such thorough reviews and evaluations? We appreciate it!

I am surprised that the 303 did as good as it did. I never thought of it as being all that good at restoring trim, but it looks like it did a pretty decent job here.

The Poorboys seems to take the cake though in terms of darkening the trim the most.

Another excellent review!

Thanks a lot Rob!!

Well, I've been pushing it lately and need to slow down a little.

My pleasure!

You are correct

Great review Corey!
I just received my PBTR and could not wait to try it so I did a little 50/50 on the seat of my 4wheeler against 303AP and just like your review the TR was a bit blacker and more shiny then the 303. I can't wait to use it on some trim. I wonder how it would work on a vinyl convertible top? I use 303 now but don't see why TR wouldn't work, anyone have any experience with that?
Again Great Review and Thanks for the tips.

As always Corey another excellent review! Thanks for taking the time to do it for us. I really enjoyed the bug and locust humor as well :props:

This will be interesting--I never found TR to last very long. Since you have a big bumper, this would have been a cool test with Black Wow and Meg's Ultimate Trim Detailer (my current favorite).

Wow, you must be psychic! First the ONR review, now this. I actually just received a bottle of PB Trim Restorer for the first time on the same order I got the ONR.

Anyway, great comparison as usual. Thanks a lot for taking the time to put this together! I have to say, though, the most interesting part for me will be the follow up posts to see the durability. On these forums I seem to recall reading that PB needs to be reapplied often to maintain the appearance. In my experience with 303, it has been holding up very well on the black plastic areas of my Prius which sits outside 24/7. The fading seems pretty minimal. I will try the PB myself and really hope it does stand up to the outdoors, because from your pics I like the looks of it.

Another interesting point is that I noticed you cleaned with ARO. That product claims to have some protection itself, so I wonder if that will affect anything?

Great review Corey! I am not much of a fiction book reader but I certainly do love me some detailing reading and I love reading your reviews!

I prefer non-fiction myself, guess that's why these reviews are so interesting to me.

Great review - as usual - this really helps with product selection - THANKS!

Man what a great review, I really appreciate all the work you put in your reviews. ;)

I love Trim Restorer. I have both it and Ultimate Protectant, and to me, Trim Restorer just seems to be the better product.

Great comparison!

I really have to remember not to buy such big bottles of product. I want to try PBTR, but I bought a 32oz of 303 AP that's still practically new lol.

Great review Corey!
I wonder how it would work on a vinyl convertible top? I use 303 now but don't see why TR wouldn't work, anyone have any experience with that?

I've used it on a number of convertible tops, including a detail I did recently of a 1972 Triumph with an original top. I did two coats of TR, one week apart. Both the owner and his wife were floored. The top looked essentially new. And the car showed the day after I did the second application at a local car show, and the owner was asked repeatedly if it was a replacement top.

This stuff is MAGIC on black vinyl. I don't even bother with any other products any more for exterior trim. I prefer Natural Look inside the car though as TR is too glossy.

I have only tried a few PB products, but so far everything has been top notch. Nice review by the way.:xyxthumbs:

Thank You, I will have to give it a try, maybe I will retire the 303.

As always Corey, thanks for the in-depth review. Great job on detailing the differences between these products.

Since someone :poke: convinced me to buy the ultima products, I also have all three reviewed above in my arsenal as well.

PBTR is great at doing exactly as advertised, restoring trim (even trim you may have given up on ever fixing) to a acceptable to like new condition. I feel like you use more of this product then the other two and I also feel it has the least durability of the three. Remember that my cars face the year round South Florida heat/humidity/rain.

303 is great is my go to interior product, although it does work well on the exterior as well. As soon as I crack my new ultima interior guard that may change. It does offer UV protection and the manufacturer claims that Disney uses it at their theme parks. If you have ever baked waiting in line at Disney World, you know that is a big testimonial. I find it to occasionally be streaky and it's durability falls somewhere in the middle of the three. Bottle last quite a while too. I also like 303 best for the engine compartment.

Ultima has by far the most durability and a nice look. It will probably end up being my go-to exterior product simply because it seems to last forever. As others have said in threads, don't let the initial price of admission scare you off, the bottle will last quite a while.

If I was forced to pick just one product moving forward I would have to give thanks to Corey for turning me on to Ultima. PB would be my choice if I detailed for a living and had to rescue badly neglected plastic.

These three will join my gummi pfledge in taking care of our personal cars going forward. If you have never tried the 1z for your seals around your vehicle, you are missing out.

Nice review Corey. :xyxthumbs:

I've been wanting to buy a sample size of PB Trim Restorer for a while now to try on the bed rail caps of my truck, but I have not seen the sample size in stock at AG for month's it seems. I did not really want to purchase the large bottle not knowing if it would actually work on my bed rail caps or not.

Have you ever tried Black WOW, Corey?

I applied several coats of Black WOW to the bed rail caps on my truck and it made very little difference at all.

Here is a picture of my bed rail caps after applying Black WOW. They have more shine, but the white areas on the top had no improvement after application, which leads me to believe that maybe nothing applied to them would help improve their appearance at this point.

Looks like PerroneFord has you covered in his reply!

As always Corey another excellent review! Thanks for taking the time to do it for us. I really enjoyed the bug and locust humor as well

Thanks Tad! As you can see I'm entertained by the little things... I try to get a couple pics of what's going on around me when I'm doing my review (for better or worse)

This will be interesting--I never found TR to last very long. Since you have a big bumper, this would have been a cool test with Black Wow and Meg's Ultimate Trim Detailer (my current favorite).

LOL, Perfect! Unfortunately I'm not...

Thank you, it was my pleasure! I have used the 303AP on many things including some "running tubes" along the side of the car that are the same material as the bumpers. It lasted a very long time and actually still looks good months later.

Another interesting point is that I noticed you cleaned with ARO. That product claims to have some protection itself, so I wonder if that will affect anything?

Good point, I don't think it will have any effect. I could be wrong but I get the feeling it leaves something behind on non porus surfaces while the smae thing subsides very quickly on porous materials.

Great review Corey! I am not much of a fiction book reader but I certainly do love me some detailing reading and I love reading your reviews!

Jon

Thank you Jon! That means a lot! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Btw: The tequila is about two weeks out.

I prefer non-fiction myself, guess that's why these reviews are so interesting to me.

Excellent!

Great review - as usual - this really helps with product selection - THANKS!

Thank you! That makes it worth doing right there.

Man what a great review, I really appreciate all the work you put in your reviews.

As I appreciate your thoughts on them. Thank you!

Great comparison!

I really have to remember not to buy such big bottles of product. I want to try PBTR, but I bought a 32oz of 303 AP that's still practically new lol.

If you don't have any severely faded trim and the 303 works good on what you've got then no worries. Don't forget you have to try UTTGP eventually as well. Btw: after going through my first bottle of 303AP I bought a gallon. That is a product that you will find plenty of uses for one way or the other.

I've used it on a number of convertible tops, including a detail I did recently of a 1972 Triumph with an original top. I did two coats of TR, one week apart. Thanks for the information PF!

I agree (about PB) and thank you!

As always Corey, thanks for the in-depth review. Great job on detailing the differences between these products.

My pleasure buddy!

Very well said. I agree with all your points. Of course I have no experience with the durability of PB TR. Btw: standing in a line at Disney may be what many are doomed to after this life... They should pay us (to crowd in there like a bunch of cattle) and stand still for the majority of 8 hours and only go on 4 rides... Apologies to those of you who love Disney :)

Ultima has by far the most durability and a nice look. It will probably end up being my go-to exterior product simply because it seems to last forever. As others have said in threads, don't let the initial price of admission scare you off, the bottle will last quite a while.

I completely agree with all of that. Ultima is my go to product for exterior trim. Using it here was not a fair display of its benefits for those who are interested in it. It wasn't featured but was rather a comparison product for durability. For trim that is not so faded Ultima really looks beautiful (and lasts forever).

Have you tried the UTTG on rims and tires. I put it on probably 2 months ago and have just been spraying down the tires with the hose and washing the rims with Ultima Wash. It's a very matte finish on the tires but they stay looking clean and new day in and day out. The rims bead like crazy every time I wash. Also, I love what the UTTG has done on my window seals. At first it did not dry completely... Basically if I touched it with my finger I could see my fingerprint on it. I put it on way too thick and its probably not the best application for UTTG. After a few days or a week (can't remember which) I wiped the seals dry. That was weeks ago and they have never looked as good as they do now.

If I was forced to pick just one product moving forward I would have to give thanks to Corey for turning me on to Ultima. PB would be my choice if I detailed for a living and had to rescue badly neglected plastic.

Also very well said! Thanks for adding an excellent synopsis! All of your information is accurate and to the point.

So what do you think about the bed rail caps in my previous post, Corey?

Have you ever tried Black WOW to offer up a comparison to PB's Trim Restorer? I'm just trying to decide if it would be worth spending the money on to give it a try.

Thanks. :xyxthumbs:
