Scorched clearcoart?

While using cutting compound and a cutting pad trying to remove a scratch, I believe I may have scorched the clear.

The attached pic has been resized, the affected area is roughly the size of a nickel. Any chance of repairing this without paint work?

Yes, a Dewalt rotary. Red cutting pad with Meguiar's UC.

No. You now have missing clear. To correct it means replacing the clear and outside of a body shop it's going to be hard to do and have it look like nothing ever happened.

"nothing ever happened" is usually most people's criteria for a repair. Easy to wish for, hard to do.

The more your "touch" this are the more this area of missing clear coat is going to grow. That is the perimeter line you see that is the visual difference between the clearcoat and the basecoat will grow as you continue to abrade it.


I'd say your best bet is to STOP working on this area and get some Opti-Coat II and apply this permanent paint coating and then do everything you can to be careful with this area into the future and try to keep the car out of the sun.
