Hey Guys: Trying to get started in a mobile production detail and headlight restoration business for retirement. I just can' wrap my arms around offering work for free. I live in the Keys have no relatives close by and no friends [by design} Any ideas how I can get some practice and get my name out there.

Most of us started practicing with our own cars, family and neighbors. You are asking for trouble immediately if you think you are going to get "practice" on your paying customers vehicles. Bad word of mouth travels so fast. If you make a mistake, and you will, you're going to wreck your reputation.

I offer work for free when I think it will bring me more paying work in the future. For example, I go to law offices and sell a package deal for all the employees as a perq from the boss. The boss gets his/her car done for free. I detailed a local real estate agents garaged car for free because I knew he would show all his rich buddies. And he did, and I gained 4 customers.

Thinking outside the box, rent a cheap car from a rental car company and detail it. There will be plenty of swirls and scratches to practice on!

You could drive up to Stuart for a Competition Ready detailing class, that will get you some hands-on experience.

Doesn't sound like OP wants to spend that kind of money.

You are in the Keys! I would learn boat detailing as well. Gelcoats are different.

The guy is a senior and just wants a part time job (polishing head lights) not polishing a yacht. LOL

I would agree, take the Competition Ready detailing class up in Stuart, Fl. And / or The Boat detailing class. It might seem expensive, but, look at it as an investment.

hahaha yes I made my millions before age 35 and now I detail cars in my retirement. Rolls Royce and Lambos only ROFL.
