I'm a noob, and this is probably a noob topic, but I have the question and others have as well on this and other forums, so I'm inviting comments to settle the question, "does a wobble in the backing plate on a dual action/random orbital matter?" What I mean by this is best demonstrated by a youtube video i came across:

[ame]www.youtube.com/watch?v=wK0xQ8-8vu0[/video]

My new GG6 ROP's backing plate does this, looking at it closely the spindle seems fine and true, it looks like the backing plate itself. I've used my new GG, all things being as they appear, nothing seemed out of order for a mechanical device like this. But I'm a noob.:buffing:

I suspect this kind of wobble, that is limited to the backing plate itself, is not important because the backing plate spins so slowly on a ROP.

I've seen some people say its normal, I've seen some recommend replacing the backing plate, seems to be present on a variety of models like the Meguiars' here, the Flex 3401, and my GG.

So to the experienced out there, does this backing plate "wobble" or out-of-true static spin really matter? Thanks.

I wouldn't worry about it unless you notice it during operation of the machine. The machine and BP weren't designed to spin backwards in a video, they were designed to polish a car. So, if it's doing that well for you - what the difference ?

It looks normal to me, although the last bp seems to be the smoothest.

I hardly see any wobble and only on the 2 thinner ones. The thinner ones probably warp a little easier but would think once you are applying pressure on a pad on the paint it would be fine. Just guessing though.

I just bought a regular backing plate that wobbles because the 5/16" bolt is not perfectly perpendicular to the polishing surface.

The plate that came with my DA spins perfectly flat.

I'm sure the buffing pad will absorb some of the wobble, and luckily, I'm trimming down the backing plate to 3" so that the wobble won't be huge.

bottom line, the quality control on the chinese backing plates sucks.
