Shurhold products and swirl suggestions

Hello Mike,

I found this forum and have really enjoyed reading your stuff.

I recieved a Shurhold DA polisher as a gift and tried to use it on a few small sections over my christmas break. It came with Shurhold's "Buff Magic" and wool pad along with "Pro Polish" and foam pad. The buff magic kind of scared me because its thick and seemed to dry out as I buffed.

The Pro Polish claims it is a cleaner/sealant/polish and does not say to use anything after that. It seemed to do ok but it looks like I didn't completely get all the buff magic off in a few places because it was not coming off as easily as I expected. I didn't know if I should continue to try and use these products or not.

Do you have experience with either of these products.

I just purchased the Lake Country CCS 5.5" pads last night from AutoGeek. I hope that was a good idea. If so I just need the right combo of compounds/polish/wax. I was thinking of using meguiars ultimate compound and the new white pad but was afraid that was too much to start with. I was also unsure if I could follow any of the "swirl removing magic stuff" with just one coat of something else.

Its a daily driven 2010 Black Tahoe. It has swirl marks in the paint from what looks to be a polisher's error.

Before I start again I think I will clay the paint to start fresh.

I'm not familiar with these products but it sounds as if the kit came with an all-in-one product. These products do a "decent" job but depending on the condition of the paint will determine whether or not this is the best choice.

Basic steps in order are:

  • Wash
  • Clay
  • Paint Correction & Polish
  • Seal
  • Wax
Be sure you use the appropriate backing plate with the 5 1/2" pads...

A perfect match!

Meguiar's Ultimate Compound and Ultimate Polish are great over the counter products and are the consumer versions of Meguiar's Mirror Glaze M105 & M205. Meguiar's basically gave the professional version longer working times which in my mind makes a lot of sense...

We stock these products but I have not used them on a boat or a car yet.

I will say that traditionally, compounds and polishes for gel-coat surfaces might work great on gel-coat but they tend to be too abrasive for modern, clear coat paints.

I test everything on black paint because black shows everything and when we're talking about clear coated cars, if defects are showing on clear over black then they are happening to all other cars it's just you're eyes cannot easily see the defects.

The foam pads you bought are very good pads but if the abrasive technology used in ANY product does not work on automotive clear coats then it won't matter what pad you're using because the abrasive technology doesn't work.

By the word "work" I mean it has the ability to remove defects without at the same time imparting defects.

What I recommend to everyone and what I ALWAYS practice myself is to start out doing a Test Spot.

Test the pads, products, tools and even your technique to ONE SMALL AREA and make sure you're getting the results you hope for and dream about before buffing out the entire vehicle.


Did you start out testing or did you start out buffing out the entire car?

Here's what you want to do... place a tape-line on a horizontal surface and then buff on just one side of it.

TEST TO SEE IF THE WORK YOU'RE DOING TO ONE SIDE OF THE PAINT IS MAKING THE PAINT LOOK BETTER OR WORSE THAN HOW THE PAINT LOOKED BEFORE YOU STARTED.

Is there a place you have not buffed on that you can do this type of test with the product and pads you have?


My guess is Buff Magic works great on gel-coat boats and other gel-coat surfaces like larger non-painted RV's and Campers.


I would also recommend going ahead and getting the Meguiar's Ultimate Compound and testing it with a clean, non-used foam pad and then check your results on your Tahoe's black paint.

Use the sun to inspect or get a Brinkmann Swirl Finder Light.

Welcome! Follow Mike's and Bobbyg's addvice, and you'll be ''shining'' in no time.
 
if your working on gelcoat you have the best stuff you can get for the job.frist off cut the comp down a little with water . and use a spray bot to do this then just mix it up.this comp comes to you 1000 grit pink or white comp. I use a paint brush to put it on thin coat. ps da is not the best tool for this job. A rotary is the best tool at speed 3 for me.Then when your done buffing spray with water and buff some more. then I use a dry clean wool pad and go over it agian. when all done buffing wash the hole boat before you put on the sealer.pro polish is good stuff but you need to do one 1/4 of the boat then buff it off with your da buffer.also you can use a topper wax also if you like .but not needed.
 
I am new to all of this and have read through many of mike's articles to try to get familiar before starting.

I hade already read a bunch and followed mikes suggestion and only did a test spot first. The buff magic never completely buffed clear (left behind and seemed too dry) like mikes examples did, but I followed it with the pro polish on the test spot and it did look much better than before, and I proceded to do 3 panels of the car. Once I did the larger areas I found I could still see where the Buff Magic left a light haze in certain places. I stopped and felt I should check on possibly better options to use. I probably should have clayed before I started also, but I didn't. I will next time.

Now that I have pads on the way I think I will try ultimate compound with the white or green pad and see if it works good for me. I guess I can always go to orange if needed, but hopefully it will not be needed. Before I get the compound I will look into the M105 and M205 you mentioned also.

The backing plate that came on the the shuhold is a 5", so I am assuming it will work good with the 5.5" pads.

No worries... one thing I like to point out is that EVERYONE is new to this when they start out. Some people forget that and get an ego. I never forget and someday I'll write a story that shares my "Newbie Experience".

It's my newbie experience that drives my passion to help others and another reason I make sure my posting history on any forum is always professional and courteous. I also recommend reading other supposed experts posting histories on this forum and other forums because through their words their true character is exposed.

So don't worry about being new to anything and especially detailing on this forum.

Here's where you can troubleshoot.

Place a tape-line down on a panel you've already buffed and then buff on just one side with the foam pads you just bought and one of these other compounds you're thinking of getting and then compare the results. You'll find out if you're on the right track.

Yes. The backing plate that comes with the Shurhold DA Polisher is 5" and it will work perfect for 5.5" pads.

Just recently a few other people new to machine polishing had run into some problems, off hand I don't remember the specifics except my replies had to do with troubleshooting.
