Thursday, December 15th starting at 5:00pm at Autogeek's Show Car Garage!



I've never seen one of these before and I definitely have never worked on one of these before...

This is a streetrod. It's sitting on a 1977 Monte Carlo frame and running gear, so small block 350 Chevy engine and turbo 350 automatic transmission.


The owner says she's all swirled out and does NOT pass the Baggie Test.

Hey Mike, how's it going? Just curious, how do you find these cars that you wind up working on? Or how do they find you? Is it just through meeting people at carshows and such? Or is the criteria much more complicated than that?

I'd have to say the strangest looking car I can think of is a Ford Edsel.

Unique, I like it. Front end is a tad busy, but the side profile and rear have great lines. And it's got GM bones and heart.

I wish Chevy or Ford would make a very limited production hot rod. Similar to the SSR, but with more traditional hot rod styling.

Oh and there's no way a Lincoln has a GM heart. Just sayin. Lol.

Actually I shouldn't say that... Because technically Lincolns do have a GM heart. More specifically a Cadillac heart. That's because Henry Leland, the man who formed Lincoln Motor Company, had been a former manager of the Cadillac division of General Motors prior to starting Lincoln.

Wow!
I've been a hotrod fan since the 60's and never remember seeing a Zephyr from the postwar era. Doesn't have near the character of the same brand in the prewar days, but still cool. IIRC Mike, didn't you once work on Terry Cook's "Scrape" 40 Zephyr?
Eldo, leave it to you to bring up the Leland point. Can't say this for sure, but IIRC, when Henry Ford wanted to get into luxury cars, he stole one of Cadillac's principals to head up the Division.

I have great relationships with our local car guys... this particular car belongs to my friend Mike Gelter. Mike buys and sells hotrods. He tends to buy hotrods that need help. He fixes them and then flips them. He's real good at it and when I need a car for a class he usually had one or two that need polishing.

I would go as far as to say it's ugly. It's fun to add more cars to the list of cars I've worked on in my life or used for a class and this one is unique for sure.

Definitely rare as I've never seen one until this one.

That's how I felt when I was a kid growing up. Seems like back then and even now most cars pretty much look the same.

Yes. I buffed this car out about a half dozen times when I worked for the Absorber company and toured the car show circuit with Terr Cook and his creation "Scrape".

Hey Mike, looks like a cool car to work on.

I plan on being there.

I didn't see the date anywhere. I scanned it quickly so maybe I missed it.
 
Please sign me up for this session, Mike. I was born in 1941 and remember the pre-war Lincoln Zyphers very well. This car has the front end of a 1947 Lincoln sedan but the back is not the same as the Lincoln Continental which I remember in the post-war era. My Dad had a friend with a midnight blue four-door sedan that sported push-button doors and power windows, a first for me as a six year old gearhead. This will be a trip down memory lane. Lord willing, I'll see you on Thursday, December 15th. Al
 
***Update***


The car was dropped off yesterday.

There's a lot of loose dirt and contaminants on the paint. Also some panels have something smeary and oily on them. The initial baggie test shows the paint to be very contaminated.

Lots of swirls and a few RIDS here and there. There's also two very deep scratches on the trunk lid that look too deep to remove.


I'll try to wash this car before Thursday as the tires need to be thoroughly washed before any type of tire dressing can be applied.


Class starts at 5:00pm this Thursday.
