Single stage textured/chip guard paint discoloration...solution?

I have a 1990 Miata with the original paint. My research indicates the crystal white paint is single stage. I have used #7 on the car and for the most part it looks good. The lower section of the car on both sides had a "chip guard" applied from the factory.

While led the rest of the car looks good the lower portion looks like it has yellowed. Most people may not even notice it but I do and would like to find a way to correct it. Is there a way to make this 26 year old textured paint look white again? TIA for your help.

I would have to say it's discolored from age.Try some cleaner polish on a rag to determine that.
 
So you're saying the texture is under the paint? I'm racking my brain here, I had a car a hundred years ago that had some treatment like that on a couple of spots on the lower body panels like that, and I want to say it was a "clear bra" kind of thing that was OVER the paint.

So your thinking here is that the texture was sprayed on before the paint, and whatever it is has migrated into the paint an yellowed it? Or simply that you can't polish the paint because it's textured?

PS I'm sure there are some Miata experts on the forum who will be able tell us exactly what is going on here...and on that note, have you tried a Miata forum?
 
I don't know what the process was from the factory in Japan in 1989. I tried hand polishing with Meg's #7 and it didn't make a difference like it did on the rest of the paint. I'm trying to be super careful here because this is the original paint and is nearly 27 years old. The last thing I want to do is mess it up.

I am on the Miata forum and there is a lot of great folks on there just as on here. I've learned a lot about repairing and maintaining my car on there. I just think the more experienced in the area of paint and detailing would be on here.
 
Mike, is it possible to machine polish the textured chip guard single stage paint to get the yellowing out without damaging the paint? TIA
