I have been practicing my technique on headlights recently and got to thinking is there a small sander or some kind of attachment for my drill or porter cable that i could use to sand down the headlights? I tried to do a search but the search was too wide with its results. Maybe someone here could shine some light on what they use.

Basically a drill is the only thing you need. However it you want more space between the headlight and the drill, you could buy a longer bit attachment piece

thanks bill what attachment would i need for it?

There are bits you would buy for a drill to screw in screws, however there are also much longer drill bits which you would attach to the drill on one end and the pad on the other

In my detailing boot camp classes we use the Griot's 3" Mini Polisher as a sander... works great...

Be sure to get the 3" Foam Interface Pad if you're planning on using the 3" Griot's Garage Mini Polisher for sanding headlights for dampsanding paint.

I also demonstrated the Flitz ScuffPads

The Flitz Mini ScuffPad is made of resin-coated non-woven abrasives in cut fiber strands. The flexible, durable sanding pads are perfect for contoured surfaces. Use the pads wet or dry.

The Flitz Mini ScuffPad is the equivalent to 1500 grit sandpaper. On scratched headlight lenses, plastics, wood, composite, and metal, the Mini ScuffPad sands down the scratched surface to create a more uniform surface. When you begin polishing, the entire surface is being leveled at the same rate. The results are uniform and smooth.

My article list has a couple articles on using this polisher as a dampsander. If I worked in a body shop and sanded cars every week I wouldn't be without it.

:)

The below is from my article list, you can find the link in my Signature Line.

It's easy to find my sanding articles because right before the list you'll see a 3" Griot's Mini Polisher being used as a dampsander on a 1971 GTO I used for a class on how to wetsand, cut and buff for a show car finish.
