I’ve been using Sonax plastic care on all of the wholesale vehicles I’ve been doing. It is a excellent time saver. My question is does anyone know of a way to cut it with something? The gloss on it is crazy. I would like to find something to mix with it to tone it down some.

SONAX Plastic Care Interior & Exterior

Ingredients:
•AQUA: (Water)
•DIMETHICONE: [silicone oil;
aka: polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)]
•CAPRYL GLUCOSIDE: (non-ionic surfactant)
•PERFUME: (cover-up)
•METHYLISOTHIAZOLINONE:
-(synthetic biocide and preservative)
•BENZISOTHIAZOLINONE: (biocide)
•PYRITHIONE SODIUM:
-(broad spectrum biocide)

-What information—regarding how to
effectually “cut” this Sonax product—can
be gleaned from the above ingredients list?


{Note:
•Most silicone compounds are insoluble in Water.
-For them to be “delivered” in an aqueous system,
their formulated as part of emulsions.}


•Emulsions are typically made from Water,
Silicone, and Surfactants. (All of which, BTW,
are contained in this Sonax product.)

-Emulsions tend to be specialized in their
formulation to be: ready-to-use (RTU);
or, just cut with water.


With that in mind
1.) Seems like this Sonax product should
be able to be “cut” with some water... :dunno:

Thanks for that info FUNX650. That will give me something to work on. The only reason I was thinking of not using water. I didn’t know if it would mix. Plus it is a spray and leave it product. It dries on its own with no wiping. My thought process was that if I use enough water to tone it down it wouldn’t dry on its own. Or at least take forever to dry. Plus it might mess with the bonding of the product. I was thinking of trying a IPA mixture in it to help evaporate the extra water. But I don’t know if that will effect the product.

Extra water...what extra water?

The water is part-and-parcel of the total
emulsion. So is the silicone oil/surfactant.

If the alcohol, that you propose to use, can
actually evaporate some of the water out
of its “emulsion phase”...then wouldn’t it
also have (at least) the potential to effectuate
a change in the other emulsion’s ingredients,
such as: the silicone oil; surfactant; etc.?


IMO:
Cutting this product with Water has the
most likelihood of resolving your concern.

The extra water added to cut it down.

That’s what I was afraid of. I don’t know how it will react to the silicone oil. I’m going to try a couple of different batches when I get to the shop in the morning. I think I can play around with it enough and experiment with it where I can get something usable out of it. It may not be exactly where I want it. But I think I can at least tone it down some.
 
Tried both today in various dilution ratios. It didn’t phase at all. I tried it as high as one part Sonax to one part water. But it still has the same gloss as before and it didn’t affect the drying ability of the Sonax. I thought that part was interesting.
