Speed Master brushes and protective gear?

Today was the first time I used the Speed Master tire brushes. I used them with Megs wheel brightener. The results were fantastic but I also made a mess of myself while doing it. I had rubber gloves on which I typically do when cleaning wheels but I was getting splattered every time I pulled the brushes out from between the spokes. I was concerned that I would get splatter in my eyes.

My question is what protective gear do you use when using these brushes with an acid wheel cleaner? Was I doing something wrong which made these messier than they typically are?

1) respirator?
2) eye protection?
3) gloves?
4) long sleeve shirt or sweatshirt?

This is by no means a complaint about the brushes. I loved how well they worked getting deep in the wheel where I could never get clean without removing the wheels.

Speed Master brushes are not the ideal brushes to use with an acid wheel cleaner, unless your wearing a full protective suit.

That's exactly why I love and swear by Wheel Woolies. No splatter. I haven't used my Speedmasters in forever, at best they have been relegated to cleaning wheel wells.

Ditch them and get yourself a full set of Wheel Woolies :props:

if you use an acid wheel cleaner, I would use eye protection and nitrile gloves. It’s your health your dealing with...

•I personally don’t use wheel cleaners
that contain HF/ABF acid—they aren’t
ever, ever worth the health risks they
pose. As such:
-Should this product be used by anyone
that hasn’t been professionally trained
and certified in all aspects of HF/ABF acid?
-No way in Hades, IMHO.

•Meguiar’s D140 SDS contains
the recommended PPE:

8.2.2. Personal protective equipment (PPE)

Eye/face protection
Select and use eye/face protection to prevent
contact based on the results of an exposure
assessment. The following eye/face protection(s)
are recommended:
-Full Face Shield
-Indirect Vented Goggles

Skin/hand protection
Select and use gloves and/or protective
clothing approved to relevant local standards
to prevent skin contact based on the results
of an exposure assessment. Selection should
be based on use factors such as exposure levels,
concentration of the substance or mixture,
frequency and duration, physical challenges such
as temperature extremes, and other use conditions.
Consult with your glove and/or protective clothing
manufacturer for selection of appropriate compatible
gloves/protective clothing. Gloves made from the
following material(s) are recommended:
-Butyl Rubber

If this product is used in a manner that presents
a higher potential for exposure (eg. spraying,
high splash potential etc.), then use of protective
coveralls may be necessary. Select and use body
protection to prevent contact based on the results
of an exposure assessment. The following protective
clothing material(s) are recommended:
-Apron: Butyl rubber

Respiratory protection
An exposure assessment may be needed to
decide if a respirator is required. If a respirator
is needed, use respirators as part of a full
respiratory protection program. Based on the
results of the exposure assessment, select
from the following respirator type(s) to reduce
inhalation exposure:

During heating:
Use a positive pressure supplied-air respirator
if there is a potential for over exposure from
an uncontrolled release, exposure levels are
not known, or under any other circumstances
where air-purifying respirators may not provide
adequate protection.

Half facepiece or full facepiece air-purifying
respirator suitable for organic vapors and particulates

For questions about suitability for a specific
application, consult with your respirator manufacturer.

+1. Wheel Woolies are much better because there’s no splatter .

Wheel Woolies are a lot better to use. When I first started using the Speed Master brush what I did was while pulling the brush out I would turn/twist as I was pulling it out and I always wear nitrile gloves when cleaning wheels. Give it a try. However I have switched to the Wheel Woolies.

I read so many good reviews on the speed master brushes before I bought them. I guess I did not consider what types of wheel cleaners they are compatible with.

I considered the wheel woolies but they did not look as durable and also looked like they would be hard to keep clean. Of course none of my wheel cleaning supplies stay looking clean for long but the woolies looks as though they would trap dirt more than most.

How do you find the durability of the wheel woolies?

I think I will order the three piece set of wheel woolies today while they have a sale going on.

Thanks for all the useful info. I think I will look into getting some other less caustic wheel cleaners to try.
I did love the results I achieved with the wheel brightener and speed master brushes but don't want to have to wear full safety gear every time I detail my car.
