So I knew when I put this product on my chrome wheels it was going to be a bad experience. The product goes on and looks a lot like hair spray. I prepped the wheel first polishing with Meg's all wheel polish.

Anyways I put it on a week ago. Today I washed my car, used sonax full effect on the tires. After getting the car done I noticed the wheels looking like complete ****.

I break out the Megs all wheel cleaner that comes with the yellow dynocone kit. There is like this clear grime stuck on the wheels. Again much like hair spray when it dries. I was able to get this off one wheels but it's taking a lot of elbow grease.

Ive tried rubbing alcohol too, that just made it really cloud up. I'm going to tackle it all tomorrow. Any other tips

I will NOT be using the brake dust barrier again. Will stick with the armor all product or rejex.

Megs you need to relook this product. May not be noticeable on painted wheels but on chrome it's horrible.

And another, where I was able to et most of it off, but missed around the stem. Again this is like clear glue stuck on there.

the same thing happened to me with the armor all version. I really wanted to like it, but it seemed to be a sticky mess.

dang it! i just sprayed the armor all on today to test.

what are you guys talking about? armor all is awesome. i love their line. especially the wipes and the compound. not as good as a 3m compound on the wool pads, but still does a decent job imo.

I dont really know how to take this......serious....or not serious.....

Armor all has a compound?

Anyways, I like their tire dressing.

Chrome wheels.

OptiCoat
Cquartz
or ShineSeal, the new version of ZoopSeal.

Those look like the same knock off Cobra wheels that I have, imported from China by AFS.
Mine are 8 years old now and still look like new.

Sorry to hear that you found a product that isn't all it's cracked up to be.

These are the c6 corvette wheels factory not repo. Regardless the armor all brake dust block doesn't go on like hair spray or dry like a hair spray. It's better IMO.

Don't know why anyone would use a five dollar piece of crap wheel cleaner on chrome to begin with. Chrome is very sensitive. Use the right stuff and don't blame megs for your mistake. Lol

What are you talking about? RIF... No 5 dollar wheel cleaner touched my wheels. Meguiars new dust block product is what caused this.

Chrome is very sensitive.

Actually, chrome is very touch and resistant to corrosion as long you keep it clean. If you let road grime and brake dust build up on a wheel, for example in any seam or intricate area the accumulation of road grime and brake dust will hold in moisture and the three of these thing working together can cause the chrome coating to fail. But if you keep chrome clean it will last a long time.

I've been in dozens of wrecking yards in my life including a number of antique car wrecking yards and seen very old cars with chrome still in good condition.

If keep clean, chrome wheels will last a long time, if not kept clean then the chrome coating will fail but that's not the fault of the chrome coating.

After reading through your original posting:

1.) Application process of this product:

It's my understanding that this product is best applied to wheels free from any other products, and that they be completely dry (no moisture, whatsoever, be present).

Did you remove any residues from the: "Meg's all wheel polish" you prepped the wheels with? Were the wheels completely dry?

2.) Also...Future cleaning of wheels coated with this product:

I would think the Sonax product might have played a role in your chrome wheels looking like: ****, as you stated. It has some pretty powerful ingredients that probably had adverse effects on this product. No need to go that "strong", IMO.

That's the beauty of this product - a very mild cleaner, like soap and water, is generally all you really need once this is applied. End Quote.

Pretty much, yep. Even some fairly heavy brake dust can be usually be removed with very little effort. End Quote.

3.) RE: Your trying to remove this product from your wheels:

From MOL's Michael Stoops:

Quote:
Yes, you can fix it. First off, try just spraying a second coat over the first one you have - that should level it out once it dries and cures, which should be in an hour or so. If that doesn't do it then you can remove the existing coating with either some isopropyl alcohol, Goof Off, acetone or similar solvents. You can also try just spraying some of the product onto a clean microfiber towel, using enough to get an area of the towel pretty wet, and use that to break down the existing coating and fully wipe off the excess. The solvents in the carrier ingredients should be enough to break down the existing application and allow you to remove it.
End Quote.

IMO...Might have to rethink your processes used for this product before you completely condemn it.

Thanks for doing all the above research and then posting it here Bob, very nice of you.

I've used this product twice so I'm no expert at it's application but basically it's like spraying clear paint.

One thing I know, spraying clear paint and doing a GREAT job and NOT getting any runs is a bit of a challenge for most people.

Spraying any type of paint or in this case a clear coating and doing a GREAT job is going to be a bit of a challenge for at least some people as it's simply not the easiest thing to do.

I'm going to stick with what I posted in Marc's review thread here,

Meguiar's Hot Rims Brake Dust Barrier Review and Testing

Nice review Marc. :dblthumb2:

I used this product yesterday on a set of clear coated rims after first cleaning really well. I have a little experience using rattle cans and here's a tip...

When spraying this product spray using short bursts of product, and apply, thin light coats. Allow the short bursts of product a few seconds to form together on the surface and inspect before spraying more product.

By using short bursts instead of simply taking your thumb or forefinger and pressing the nozzle down you'll get better results while reducing the chance for a run in the product.

Basically treat like you're using a can of spray paint to paint rims.

:)

And like mentioned, before using this product, especially on something as smooth as chrome, (which would be hard to paint with clear spray can paint because chrome's smooth characteristic doesn't offer much bite to paint), be sure to prep the surface by making sure it's completely clean and free of any residues from any previously used products.

I like Meguiar's and I like the "idea" of this product but chrome is actually very easy to keep clean as long as you stay up on it and don't let brake dust and road grime accumulate in the first place.

Get a good wheel cleaner and a brush or two and it's pretty easy to clean chrome wheels without the barrier product.

As for me? I'll stick to slotted aluminum mags... the set I have on both my trucks are both from the 1970's and still looking good and going strong...

I had chrome Cragers on my very rare 2-wheel drive Blazer... love them. Here's a picture taken for another article years ago and the wheels have dust on them but in reality, I kept the truck and the wheels clean all the time.

Because aluminum does oxidize, I might try re-polishing, then cleaning really well and the spraying on a coat of the Brake Dust Barrier and see how well it holds up...

:xyxthumbs:

I'd stick with OC or any other regular sealant on chrome or highly polished wheels (I've heard that UTTG+ actually works well on chrome based on the experiences of another user on here). I've used the AA version of this product on my own wheels, but just on the inner barrels to help with cleaning. Otherwise I'll do a regular paint sealant and then hit them up with a spray wax when I wash.

i think its a chrome, plastic chrome thing. when i had my canyon i tried some AA wheel protectant and it also looked like crap. i think this is limited to silver painted or cc wheels. you dont noticed it.

Thanks for your kind words Mike...(As usual, I enjoy research!)

^^^^I totally agree!!^^^^ (And this is not solely based upon the fact that I have the same C6 Corvette wheels as the OP, but other chromed wheels, as well)
