I picked up some #0000 steel wool to clean exhaust tips based on some things I read here on AGO. But I'm a bit confused as to the benefits of steel wool if the exhaust tips will rust due to small fragments of steel left behind? Should I stray away from steel and try out bronze wool?

Don't do it. Steel anything is abrasive. Polish the crud away. I'm astonished how good this stuff works:

Let high quality polishing abrasives do the work for you, leave the Brillo pads to dirty pots and pans.

Quad Zero Steel and Brass Wool can be used safely on a good number of items like metal and even glass. As with anything handle with care.

With Steel Wool, remember to flush the area extremely well to avoid any small pieces of the wool staying in place where it can then rust or harm finish. Brass wool should not do the same but more costly and harder to find locally.

I have that in the mail, I was going to try that as an alternative.

Just an FYI you can find most (including this) P21S/S100 products at your local Harley store, and also at a lot of BMW dealers if your on a pinch or just need one thing.

Steel wool 0000 is fine been using for years no problem ever.

I wouldn't use steel wool. Bronze wool is safer

I was going to ask the "type" of exhaust tips...But:
IMHO: It really doesn't matter.

I learned many valuable lessons regarding the manufacturing processes
and usages of "steel" steel-wool many years ago.
Therefore:
I feel compelled, and must express those lessons learned as such:
I never use "steel" steel-wool anywhere near a vehicle!!

Lest I forget...
I vividly remember when BC/CC paint systems were first introduced, and folks (including myself)
were still using "steel" steel-wool in the vicinity of a vehicle so painted.
-Another valuable lesson was learned, and now worth mentioning, as far as I'm concerned.

:)

I'm confused by this statement had nothing to do with using it on tips? It has never damaged any tips I have ever cleaned.

Never a problem here either. I spray water on the tips, then chrome polish on the steel wool. Combined I get good lubricity and never had a scratch. Give it a good final buff with a clean dry MF before I put on the metal sealant.
