I absolutely hate tire dressing ! It's what the car wash guys do and other who don't know. Especially if your using any of the oil based dressing . It then slings all over the clients car. I call it "Ghetto Shine"

I've detailed many exotics and hot rods in my almost 17 years ( next month ) and that greasey looking crap on especially exotics and hot rods looks like %^$#@!*!

I will scrub the tire with a good degreaser, and then run spray on leather conditioner on the tires. and let it drip , I know you're gonna say well what about getting it on the rim , well I do the "leather conditioner Dressing" directly after washing the vehicle, before I buff the car and before I wax the rims. I know what you thinking, but believe it works best this way. If you wait to dress the tires after the detail, Murphys law will happen , and you'll get a puff of wind and get whatever kind of dressing your using on the side of the car.

Anyway, The leather conditioner gives the tire a much better look to the tire and a more natural look , than Ghetto shine !

Like wise with dressing engine compartments, that greasey crap on engine compartments is terrible, and ofcourse is also a dirt magnet. So again I use spray on and wipe leather conditioner.

When dressing engine compartments on hot rods, etc. I use talcum power, because it gives the engine bay that "factory" look

Hmmm... I also do not like the "Crisco" look on tires.

In your pictures it is very hard to tell the effect of your process...

It looks a little "Ashy" for my taste but, this is purely a personal preference with no right or wrong.

I prefer a matte, rich, look that Surf City water based dressing provides

Or you could just use 303 on the tires and under the hood and it gives off a matte finish with no shine and provides UV protection. And it doesn't attract dust under the hood either.

Not all tire dressings are ghettotastic. There are some that just simply protect the tires and don't do much to "enhance" the look. I would say since they are formulated for rubber - they are going to do a better job than leather conditioner.

If you get the Getto look and sling, you using the wrong product or doing it wrong.

I have used Meg's ASD, I now also use 1z-einszett vinyl and rubber.

I've used water based dresings as well and they , to me and more importantly my clients, a fake look and it doesn't last like the leather conditioner.

Of course the best thing I've found for rubber, but it's hard to find , is called "Rubber Lube" , it comes in pint bottles and is yellow in color.

Here's a better pic of leather conditioner on tires

I don't get that Ghetto look , because I don't use Oil Based or water based tire dressing, I was referring to what you see all the car wash chains and other "Detailer's" do

You might want to try Optimum Opti-Bond Tire Gel. It's a thick, water-based gel and works very well. Dries to the touch with a fairly matte sheen and does not look greasy by any means.

If it looks like those greasey tires on that red car in your pic ... no thanks .besides I've used leather conditioner for years on most of the close to 5,000 cars I've detailed

Kinda blunt id say, Jeez might wanna tone down the attitude.

No attitude .....I just don't use tire dressing, and the tires in that pic of his red car look greasey, what NONE of my clients like. I wasn't trying to be rude , just stating my opinion.

That's Poorboy's Bold N Bright on my tires in that picture. Not necessarily what most consider "greasy", and totally irrelevant to my recommendation. I guess next time I'll keep my mouth shut when I'm trying to be helpful towards you since you seem to take it the wrong way.

Glad im not the only one that took it that way....

Man O Man , your the second one to slam me , for not wanting to buy that tire dressing . I meant no harm in my reply. I didn't come to this site to get sales proposals, I just thought I could offer some of my expertise in Detailing for help , thats all.

Don't be so sensitive to what people reply to you. It's just not that big of a deal !

Maybe in the future , I won't reply to posts , if everyone is gonna be super sensitive !

I apologise !

Your post came off as disrespectful, and the comment towards my car had nothing to do with the recommendations I made. I don't make commission or get a cookie from selling you tire dressing, I was SHARING my own knowledge. Opti-Bond is one of my favorite dressings, and there are tons of people on here that feel the same way, which is why I suggested that you try it.

I agree with Matt,

you first post seemed pretty crappy like you were rippin on 95% of the people on here.

maybe in the 90's people didnt like it, i dont know...

i hate letting cars go away without it. looks unfinished. i have not had a customer ever, in the past 10 years (im only 24 now) ask me to not put that on there tires. everyone i know likes the look. (besides the people on here who dont like it)

i use meg's tire dressing with the pad it comes with. You can drive away right after its applied and no sling. Its a gel, and i lay it on thin. Lasts for weeks. ive never had it last for less than a week. on daily drivers, your car is back to being dirrty in a few weeks anyways.

Im going to try your leather conditioner option sometime though.

The leather conditioner on the tires is an interesting idea. I'm not a big fan of tire dressings and don't use them on my personal vehicles. However, if the customer wants it on their vehicle, then they'll get it.

As a detailer, I'm always looking for a better way of doing things. If I didn't want to improve, the customers would ultimately be the ones suffering.

What spray on leather conditioner do you use? You said you let it drip. Anything after that or does it soak in to leave the look you're after?

As for the other's replies, you did come off pretty strong for this being one of your first posts. Coming on a detailing forum and basically demanding that everyone stop using tire dressings is not the way to win praise and get the respect you may deserve. You immediately make everyone want tune you out and not listen to anything you may have to offer. This, of course, is just my opinion.

Colin

I'm also not a fan of the high gloss dressings that sling. I do find that the use of some of the water based dressing gives a nice matte finish and I go back and wipe them off after about 15 minutes and there is never any sling on the car.

Here is Meguiar's Hyper Dressing at 4:1 :xyxthumbs:
