Hi everyone,

Purchased a new to me car and put the '08 Charger under a sunbrella car cover here in Phoenix. It gets out every month or so as it is the best four person vehicle we have. Just today my wife showed a code in her GTI so I pulled the cover to swap her the Charger while I run a diagnostic on the GTI with VCDS. What did I find but badly sun damaged side molding on the top of the molding; worse on the side that gets the most sun. The damage is the color of the cover.
Really nice on a white car right? It doesn't wipe off. Any ideas on what caused this issue and how do I stop it and repair the damage? View attachment 58418

The car has been owned since new, mostly garaged, but has spent many days in the sun in the past. The cover was over $500 and is form fitted to the Charger. I plan on contacting the cover manufacturer, but any advice from the group would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Sounds like UV damage. Clean well with APC, wipe down with IPA and coat with Solution Finish.

What is APC and how would beer help remove the damage? Just kidding about the beer, but what does IPA stand for in this case?

This car has carried Zaino for about three years with a most recent recoat about 6 months ago. No damage like this as ever occurred in the 9 years I have owned the car in Phoenix. Yes it was parked in a garage much of the time, but it has seen its share of sun. This damage occurred while under a $500 Sunbrella Covercraft cover in under one month. How could it possibly get UV damage under a cover? Looks like transfer from the cover to the trim. The manufacturer has responded to my inquiry and senior management is looking into it.

More to come.

Mildew maybe? RV & trailer products can address mildew.

Update: The cover has been off now for a month and the sun has baked out most of the damage. Covercraft agreed to buy back the cover from me as that is the remedy I requested. I can't use the cover and believe it caused the damage. hopefully they will test it and discover what happened and upgrade their product line. Phoenix is really tough on everything due to the high heat and UV. I have used a couple different covers on other vehicles in the past they worked fine, but this one didn't meet the challenge.
