I know it will remove any light scratches and swirls, but is there any detriment? I know the heat from a polisher would be bad on plastic, but outside of that...?

not sure what you are using but Extreme Elements by Britemax has done pretty good work on most of the headlights I have needed to clean up

You can actually use regular polish on tail lights and headlights. Something like Megs 105 or UC should do well.

If the scratches are deep you may need to wetsand then polish out. Are you applying by hand or with a DA or rotary?

As long as you don't go hog wild with a rotary, using polishes etc is fine on plastics. I have used then by hand, DA and rotary on headlights, taillights and police light bars with no adverse effects.
