temporarily protecting scratches

My car got hit with some debris yesterday in a storm and it left some scratches that look to go all the way through the base coat, will a wax help protect that area until I can repaint?

If you're going to apply some paint, the wax will contaminate it.

I think you will be better off to leave it alone and then clean the area as best as you can and then apply the paint.

Waxes, paint sealants or coatings don't normally promote good paint adhesion.

Thanks Mike, I am going to touch up the paint, with base and clear, and will then level the clear to be even with the rest of the paint.

Does anybody have any recommendations on a body shop safe compound or polish to use to level the extra clear down?

I want to avoid sanding if possible because the scratches are thin lines and I don't want to mess up the area around it and cause a bigger problem.

Just got nice and easy on the wet sanding. One pass, check it, one pass, check. Always work with a high number and go down if it's not leveling out enough.

Less is more, and patience is a virtue, you will be fine.

I chunked out a piece of my door down to the metal a few months ago getting out of the car. Took me around 3 days while letting the paint/clear cure, but I just took my time and came out with a good result:

Can't even see it up until about 1 foot away from the car and gotta be looking for it.

Thanks, yeah I am probably going to start with a body shop safe compound, probably CG V36 or meg's m105 and see if I can get it smooth without wetsanding at all, as long as I get the amount of clearcoat right it shouldn't be too much excess to remove.
